If you ask a random person to paint a picture of success, they’ll probably tell you it looks like a power suit and leather briefcase, first-class flights, standing on stage delivering a talk to a big crowd, driving a fancy car and living in a big ol’ house, getting featured in the media, being surrounded by “important” people, etc.
This is what the world tells us success looks like and I believed it wholeheartedly (in fact I chased after it wearing 4-inch heels for too damn long).
“Slowing down” isn’t exactly glorified in our society.
Saying no to HUGE opportunities is practically sacrilege.
Opting for a night of Netflix over a night of cocktails with industry influencers!? Only someone striving for mediocrity would do such a thing.
Now that I’m more than 20 years into my business and 50 years into this fabulous life, I am taking no more B.S.
From here on now, I’ll be opting out of what everyone else says success is and opting into what feels like success to me.
This is why many mornings you’ll find me hanging out in my pajamas until at least noon, lingering in bed with a new book while snuggling with my pups, and slow drinking back to back cups of coffee.
This is my new definition of success.
It’s why my weekends are no longer filled with work or business conferences. Instead, you might find me making homemade green juice, tinkering with my hydroponic lettuce garden, doing needlepoint or Sudoku, or sitting by our fire pit with friends and family.
This is my new definition of success.
I travel if and when I want to, not because of FOMO or because “everyone who’s anyone” will be there.
This is my new definition of success.
And I’ve figured out how to design my business around it. I no longer subscribe to the notion that I need to bust my ass 340 days a year so I can enjoy the remaining 12.
As it turns out, I didn’t have to sacrifice all those nights, weekends, and moments with my family in order to be successful.
I wish I’d believed this to be true sooner.
It’s why I’m shouting my profound realization from the rooftops and making sure every creative CEO I can possibly reach hears this.
Whatever your definition of success may be, you too can design your business and your life around it. Inside DesignYou, my signature 12-month coaching membership for creatives, we focus on helping our clients do exactly that.
