A Chat with Susanna Salk

Posted by

I hope you’re enjoying my week of guest appearances! Today I thought it would be fun to sit down for a quick chat with Susanna Salk, author of the new book Be Your Own Decorator. I am thrilled to share that Susanna will be Skyping in to our next Design Camp A-Z in May to share more on her inspiration for this book and how to realize the dream of seeing your work or home in print.

Of course, I would love to have you all join me for camp in a few weeks, but if you aren’t able to make it, here’s a peek at what she has to say about her inspiration…

TF: What inspired you to create this book?

SS: The designers and tastemakers’ extraordinary work I featured within the book! For years their rooms have helped to empower me to find my own style and to create more vibrant rooms in my own home. I wanted to expose others to what I’ve been lucky enough to see, in hopes it will help them, too. Whether they are lucky enough to already be working with a decorator and need style guidance, or they are doing themselves, either way, we all need inspiration.

TF: How does it differ from your other books? Was the process of creating it different from your previous experiences?

SS: I had the privilege – and the task – of culling through so many images. The sky was the limit! There was no set subject like my other books (Weekend Retreats or Room for Children); the rooms just had to move me in some way.

TF: Inspiring readers to be their own decorator is a big task. Did you know the book had to be visual from the start?

SS: Absolutely! It was SO important to me that the rooms be shown as full pages or spreads to really entice and educate readers.

TF: What about the book’s unique categories? How did you come up with those?

SS: Every great room has a little bit of all of them in some way. I wanted the book to be divided into chapters, so that if you were just looking for color inspiration, you could turn to the color chapter and have 30 different options from a variety of designers that exuded great color. These categories work as elements that helped define the book the way they do a room.

TF: What’s next for you?

SS: I’m working on the first pictorial celebration of CZ Guest’s iconic style. It will take readers through her homes, gardens and her fashion sense. The book will be out Spring 2013 from Rizzoli.

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Susanna!

I adore This book!!! I had the good fortune to meet Susanna Salk and it should come as no surprise that she is as approachable and accessible in person, as she is in her design…this, to me is so attractive in a designer, especially one of her stature. I think we all have gifts and our own special eye and I appreciate that she continually keeps hers wide open! Thanks Susanna
