Elizabeth Moyer’s Cocktail Hour American Style

Posted by

I have long been a fan of the blog Pretty Pink Tulips.  But it wasn’t until Kravet’s Blogfest 2011 just last month that it’s author Elizabeth and I got to be friends.  I am so happy Elizabeth has agreed to be a part of our All-American blog series and today she is bringing us a little Summer Cocktail Hour, American style! I’ll drink to that, won’t you?

Hi everyone! I’m so thrilled to be guest blogging today for Tobi about something All-American! I am happiest when I’m entertaining or stirring up some entertaining ideas, so that is the focus of today’s post.

The British have their afternoon tea, the Spanish have siesta, but something we Americans have mastered is the evening cocktail hour. There is something so relaxing about fixing a cool drink (be it alcoholic or not) in a beautiful glass, adding a little garnish and handing it to a friend with a monogrammed cocktail napkin.

Steuben Glass has been crafting beautiful crystal in New York for over a century. Crystal illuminates everything it touches and adds a dash of elegance to any drink your pour.

If you’re entertaining outdoors, by the pool or at the beach, and want something pretty but not precious, La Plates, based out of Kansas City, has adorable monogrammed glasses, like the ones I used at a recent beach bash.

Personalized paper napkins can be great, but if you want to take any entertaining moment to the next level, have yours monogrammed by Leontine Linens, based out of New Orleans and hand embroidered by artisans in Kentucky. I love that they have created a slightly oversized napkin, 6″ x 8″, which can wrap around a cold glass.

Now, for the actual drink, I must confess a weakness for champagne, but since we are focusing on All-American, I want to tout my favorite vodka, Tito’s. Distilled in my home state,Texas, and hands down the BEST vodka I have ever tasted, it was recently certified the first Made in America spirit. I like it with a generous amount of club soda and fresh lime.

Every good cocktail has a little nibble to go with it. My favorite gourmet “slice and bake” is Mamie’s Famous Cheese Wafers, produced in Alabama. Order a bunch, stash in the freezer and you will never again fear inviting friends over for last minute cocktails.

Wherever you live, there’s nothing that beats stirring up fun with friends.

Cheers to Tobi and cheers to all your summer entertaining, American style!

  1. I heart Tito’s, being that Texas is my homestate as well. I’m a Manhattanite forever now, but that great state will always have a place in my heart. When I moved to NYC 5 years ago, I was so happy that my local shop sold Titos! Those cheese wafers look amazing.

Where does one purchase those wonderful mint julep tumblers at a reasonable price??? I could settle for mixing shapes from estate sales, consignment shops. But that’s an effort that may take awhile to bring to fruition. Any suggestions?

  6. Love the idea of monogrammed cups (well anything monogrammed), adds a personal touch. We do have the cocktail hour down for sure. 🙂 Personally I am proud to be an American…..and LOVE LOVE LOVE (did I say that enough) Titos made here in the good ol’. With fresh lime and a splash of cranberry along out on the porch with friends makes for a perfect way to wind down at the end of the day. Thanks for the great tips.

  7. lovely monogrammed linens, elizabeth. fun post….donna

How fun to see the oh so stylish Elizabeth gracing your pages. She is the best at organizing chic get togethers. Love all her fabulous suggestions and since I’m a vodka drinker (when I’m not imbibing the bubbly stuff), I am definitely checking out Titos. Love her all American style!

  22. We love a monogrammed Americana cocktail hour! Thanks for featuring La Plates – we were honored to be a part of such a fab collection. We should all toast together sometime – now that would be a fun cocktail party!

  23. Hi, Neat post. There is a problem with your site in web explorer,
could check this? IE still is the marketplace chief and a
large section of folks will leave out your fantastic writing
    due to this problem.

A different wonderful theme idea for your get together
is definitely the modern fluorescents party
theme. A heavy duty motor, hard-mounted heating coil and high pressure fan mean this hair dryer will last a good long time.
You can protect your i – Phone and still let your perky personality show.

  25. […] What an honor, then, to be invited to write a guest post for her blog this week on something All American! I’m happiest when I’m stirring up ideas for a party or entertaining, so hop on over […]
