More Expert Advice from Tobi

Hi Friends,

It’s me, Tobi, back with another dose of my own best advice ever.  I hope you’ve enjoyed all my expert friends in the series this month. And I have brought you insight this month into the best business advice and life advice I was ever given. Now I am bringing you some of the best design advice I ever received.

There are SOOOO many things that I have learned over my 17 plus years of being in the design business, but some of the most important and well-used advice I was ever given was to incorporate antiques and one-of-a kind items into my projects to really take them to the next level.

Now I am a BIG fan of reproductions and can hardly do a design project without going to some of my all-time favorite brands like Hickory Chair to make a room both functional and gorgeous. And we all know that sometimes antiques and repurposed pieces are not the most functional and easy to use items.

But what antiques lack in function, they make up for in charm. And I have been working hard over the last 5-6 years to incorporate more one-of-a-kind furnishings, original artwork, vintage finds, antique lamps and other unique pieces to really set my projects apart and help my clients have spaces that are uniquely them.

So if you aren’t already doing this for your home or your projects, I highly encourage you to give it a try. And the good news is that I have several ways to help you marry the perfect new and antique, vintage, or one-of-a-kind pieces in your life.

First, my next One Kings Lane Tastemaker Tag Sale starts TOMORROW!! Beginning Friday morning, you can get your hands on not only many things from my fabric and pillow collection, but also refurbished vintage finds and several gorgeous antiques in my sale.  My great friends at Morris Antiques were the source of many of my antique finds in the sale and you won’t want to miss seeing them and adding them to your collection.

And speaking of collections, just yesterday we announced live on KATV that our next Design Camp A to Z will be November 7-9th in my studio in Little Rock. So here is your chance to learn my 26 step program for creating magazine worthy interiors that incorporate the best new and old collections for a unique look. In my camp, there is a whole step on Repurposing and my sweet friend Kathryn Greeley, author of The Collected Tabletop, will be back to teach us about adding antiques into your interiors and your entertaining for a “Collected, not Decorated” look.

And if that’s not enough, we will be taking another guided antiquing tour lead by Kathryn on Saturday after camp to some of Arkansas’ best antique sources including my friends at Morris Antiques. So if you miss out on some of the great things I found at Morris’ for my One Kings Lane Sale, you can have another opportunity in November to find something similar in their huge antiques inventory. Definitely a trip you won’t want to miss.

And last but certainly not least, you may have seen the great Serena and Lily One Kings Lane Sale earlier this week and I hope you purchased some of their great steals and deals. But if you are still looking for the perfect bedding. I hope you will head on over to their site and see the bed I created with their Make Your Bed tool.  Serena and Lily asked several Tastemakers to create beds for the launch of their tool and I am in good company with bloggers like and celebrity Molly Sims, so go check out what I designed and let me know what you think.

And then head to my One Kings Lane sale tomorrow and get some great pieces to mix in with your new Serena and Lily bed to give it that unique and one-of-a-kind appeal that only antiques and vintage finds can add to a space.

Thanks for letting me share a little piece of design wisdom with you today. Happy Shopping on One Kings Lane and Serena and Lily this week and please join us for Design Camp A to Z this November to learn how to turn all your purchases and finds into the gorgeous magazine worthy interior of your dreams.

See you then! xo, Tobi

This is great advice, Tobi. My favorite rooms are the ones with a mix of old and new, exactly as you described. I feel like 100% new rooms tend to feel a little lifeless and “decorated” vs. authentic to the homeowner.

  2. I was on OKL today and noticed you would be a Tastemaker tomorrow so I headed over to your blog to tell you how excited I was…and what do ya know…you’ve blogged about this exciting news!

And I have your camp on my radar…I can’t make it this year b/c of scheduling conflicts but it would be my dream to attend one of these days! Thanks for all of the great advice!
