Expert Advice: Julie Thigpen

Happy Thursday friends! We’ve heard from a ton of great designers, business-minded individuals and all-around fabulous people in general. Today, I’m happy to have Julie Thigpen of Belle Maison blog and Modern Chic Home here to share a few words that inspire her. Enjoy! xo, Tobi

One of the best bits of design advice I’ve received came from Celerie Kemble, who said…

“When it comes to color and pattern in diminutive spaces, go for it. The smaller the room, the more saturated the color and the more dramatic it’s patterns should be…a clutter of color or texture is very different from the clutter of objects.”- Celerie Kemble, To Your Taste

I came across this quote in her book, To Your Taste, and instantly connected with it. I’m a huge believer in using color and pattern in the home — just as Tobi is –, but sometimes it can be a challenge to successfully pull it off. People often shy away from decorating with bold patterns and bright colors but with a little bit of courage and imagination, the end result can be beautiful and dramatic! I’ve pulled together some fantastic examples of spaces designed with pattern and color; as you can see, this can be done tastefully, without being overwhelming.
