Tobi TV: 6 Ideas for Fabulous Architectural Details

Posted by

If you’re working on a new build or a major renovation of your house, adding fabulous architectural details can not only help you get the bones of your home right, it can add a lot of value to the house!

My project in the April issue of Traditional Home was a brand new build, so we had a great opportunity to work with the architect and contractor to bring in some terrific features and ideas to complement and enhance the farmhouse design. If you’re interested in adding special details in your home, consider these ideas:

Isn’t that a beautiful home? Let’s review those ideas for adding architectural details:

1. Reclaimed beams are a great environmentally-friendly idea, but they also add a stunning look to a room!

2. Creating a checkerboard pattern (or other pattern) with different wood tones creates a floor so gorgeous that you don’t even need to cover it with a rug. It’s pretty and tidy!

3. I used old barnwood in the master bedroom, but ran it horizontally on the walls to be a bit more modern and painted it with a creamy tone to really enhance the farmhouse style!

4. Paneled doorways and a coffered ceiling added luxe design details in the formal living room and around the home.

5. For a little whimsy, I used the “silhouette” of a baluster to turn this stair railing into a fun architectural feature instead of typical stair style.

6. In the entry, the architect suggested an oval window and I loved it! Adding panel molding not dresses it up with more character and makes the home feel like it’s old and charming.

As famed architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe once said, “God is in the details” and I agree it’s the details that make a difference when you’re designing a home. What architectural features are your favorites? Let me know in the comments section below!

Tobi TV: How to Move Color Through Your Home

Posted by

Using color in one room is enough of a challenge, but using color cohesively throughout the home can be a tough proposition for most people!

I love to move color through a home, and I’m going to show you my best tip for doing that AND making each room work together in my farmhouse project that was just featured in Traditional Home. Let’s take a look:

See? It isn’t as hard as you think to have bold color throughout your entire house! Let’s look at how those colors worked together again:

  • First, the master bedroom has rich shades of brown and green.
  • As we move to the dining room, the brown tags along.
  • Then the aqua in the dining room pairs perfectly with the same color in the formal living room.
  • That’s where we picked up the cobalt that then goes into the kitchen, where it’s paired with red.
  • That bold red moves upstairs into the kids’ playroom and their individual bedrooms, too!

Each room works together to create a cohesive color story! Let me know what you think about this bright idea in the comments section below! And don’t miss me talking all about color this month in my Transformation column in Traditional Home in their annual color issue. My column is all about my own home renovation and the way I used color at home for my own family. Click here to see more!

I’m known for using color – so much so that my brand is Bright, Bold, and Tailored. So let’s look at a room this week that I saturated with a bright and bold color. Purple is such a great color to work with, and I love every hue from luxurious, rich purples like royal and plum to paler shades like lavender and periwinkle.

Color psychology says that purple stimulates the imagination and spirituality, which made it the ideal color for the study in my Riverside Penthouse project. I know that, for some, working with color can be intimidating, so here are my tips for pulling off purple:

Oh, I so love that color! Let’s recap those tips for purple:

  1. Purple is great for the bold and daring decorator. It can create a dark, cozy place that is perfect for curling up with your favorite book or magazine.
  2. Purple is an ideal color if you’re letting your fabrics lead the way. Pick the perfect purple textiles and go from there!
  3. If you’re inspired by fashions from Europe, then purple is perfect for you! Moody hues like purple and blue create an amazing continental look.
  4. Small spaces can use a rich hue like purple, too! It will create the jewel box effect and turn your space into a gem.
  5. If you’re a movie buff, purple definitely brings the drama!

Talk about stimulating the imagination! These tips should have you ready to paint your world purple! Let me know in the comments below where you like to use purple.

Wishing you a happy, and colorful, New Year!

I can hear some of you saying: “Fashion tips for the kitchen?! Have you been hitting the eggnog, Tobi?” But you really can dress up your kitchen with fashion ideas! I find a lot of inspiration on runways, even for rooms like the kitchen where you can take your look from haute couture to haute cuisine.

The key to designing a fashion-forward and glamorous kitchen is to make the space feel luxurious and expensive while adding in some unexpected features that make it ahead of it’s time. Let’s take a look at one of my favorite haute kitchens!

Can you see why I love this kitchen? Let’s recap what really makes the design so fashionable:

  1. Don’t be afraid to embrace Carrara marble countertops for a glamorous kitchen. Nothing is more beautiful, especially with a matching backsplash.
  2. Tired of white kitchens? Try a shade of gray for your cabinetry and brass hardware for a fashion-forward look.
  3. A sleek induction cooktop with a mirrored finish will add some high-tech shine to your haute couture kitchen.
  4. Brass is back and really packs a punch for a glamorous kitchen! Try adding brass with a vent hood, hardware, or pendant lighting over the island.
  5. Add something unexpected to your kitchen, like a library ladder to get to those hard-to-reach cabinets, or think about out-of-the-box ideas for seating.

Details really will pump up the glamour, so try these tips to make your kitchen runway ready. Let me know in the comments below how you are inspired by fashion in your home!
