Gift Guide: Living the Good Life

Posted by

Living the good life. Do you want to? Well it isn’t always about having lots of money and buying expensive things. It’s mostly about making memories, especially during this time of the year.

But yes, there are those of us who love fine things, myself included.  And sometimes it’s more about good taste than a high price tag, right?  So whether your budget allows for expensive splurges this Holiday season or you just want to look like it does, here’s my mix of High and Low priced lovely things that will have you and your loved ones living the good life.

And since it’s Cyber Monday, the biggest online shopping day of the year, I bet you can get some deals on many of these fab finds today only. Good luck! (P.S. I have 2 more days of gift guides to help you finish your shopping before December has hardly started. So stay tuned for my last few favorites coming your way this week!)

Happy Shopping Darlings! xo,

  1. Valentino “Rock Stud” Pumps–A splurge for sure, these gorgeous red studded pumps from Valentino will have you looking like the Bell of the Ball this holiday or maybe like a rather fancy Mrs. Claus. Are these the perfect gift for YOU this year? Then your honey needs to be sent a link to purchase these hot little numbers to put under the tree. I’ll vouch for you that you’ve been a good girl! Don’t love the Red? Well don’t worry. These babies come in many colors so you can pick the one you love most.
  2. Beaded Pillow–this “Ritzy”-looking Rizzy Home beaded pillow only looks expensive. Add a few of these to your sofa to jazz things up a bit. Or gift these to your friends with a new home or your stylish college student for her bedroom. You’ll have them all looking glamorous in no time!
  3. Aerin Match Striker–I have a thing for gorgeous Match Strikers. And boy did Aerin Lauder ever make a fabulous brass one! Yes, it’s pricey but I’m ordering this beautiful piece for myself today. Merry Christmas to me! It’s so pretty it doubles as an accessory so it’s my favorite sort of piece, beautiful and functional all at the same time. This makes a great gift for those hard to buy for friends and family who live the good life and seem to have everything already.
  4. Manolo Blahnik Book–So maybe splurging on a pair of Manolo’s isn’t in your budget right now, but putting his gorgeous book on your coffee table just may be. This is a  gift that all those “Carrie Bradshaw’s” in your life will appreciate. So if you are a fashionista or an interiors enthusiast or have some of them on your list, this will be the perfectly pretty and inspiring gift to decorate their homes.
  5. Kate Spade “Money” Phone Cover–It’s all about the Money, Money, Money. Ok, so maybe you don’t have as much cold, hard cash as you wish this holiday, but not to worry. This adorable “Money” phone cover won’t break the bank. Designed by the creatives at Kate Spade, this glam little item will have you feeling like a million buck while you Cyber-shop on your iPhone. It is perfectly sized for a stocking stuffer too. And at this great price, maybe you should buy 2!
  6. Marabou Vest–What could be more glamorous and chichi than a Marabou Vest? Well thank goodness for Betsey Johnson because she came to the rescue with this adorable one! This piece is great for layering and if you don’t want black, no worries. It comes also comes in blush and gray. I think this gift will get squeals from those Fancy peeps on your list.
  7. Pointy Toe Leather Bootie–This gorgeous and classic leather bootie by Sam Edleman exudes style and sophistication. And though it looks top of the line, the price tag isn’t too bad. Yes, still an investment but one that will go with anything and everything for seasons to come and it looks MUCH more expensive than it really is. I think this is the perfect gift for those shoe-lovers on your list. And if you’re wondering, I’m a size 8. (wink!)
  8. Oversized Leopard Clutch–Ok, another Splurge item but Oh My! This gorgeous leopard clutch is dreamy. Forget Sugar Plums, I have visions of Leopard in my head and this zip top clutch with gold hardware makes my dreams super sweet! Do you have anyone on your list who would love to be “seeing spots” with this cutie under the tree?
  9. Nest Holiday Candle–Nest brings the Glam to candles. And they have the BEST scents! Looking lovely and high style in it’s gold packaging, I think the Nest Holiday Candle (Birchwood Pine Scent) is the perfect Hostess Gift or Stocking Stuffer. I can hardly wait for the holidays to roll around each year so I can light one of these lovelies and make my whole house smell like Christmas!
  10. Osis “Dust it” Hair Powder–Want to look like you stepped out of a high-dollar salon all season long? Well this product will do the trick. I love Dust it Powder to give my hair control and long-lasting hold while still looking soft. It’s like dry shampoo but better. Drop one of these in the stocking of all the ladies in your life. I see some glamorous hair in their future!
  11. Celine Havana Sunglasses–Celine brings us these gorgeous and totally chic sunglasses to help you and yours look like a star. The bold black frames are detailed with red edges and a beige interior for some added appeal and Hollywood Style.
  12. Parisian Bar Cart–A Bar Cart definitely makes the list of my favorite things! Seriously, what’s more glamorous than serving drinks from this black and brass beauty to all your Holiday guests? And the top Shelf doubles as a removable tray to make serving that much easier. Oh Santa Baby, I’ll have a martini, please! And pair it with this stylish bar cart from Serena and Lily if you don’t mind.
  13. Gold Caviar Serving Set–Dahling, if you’re serving Caviar at your next soiree, this Gold Imperial Caviar 4-piece hostess set by Marchesa is a MUST have. For those on your list who have a sophisticated palette, this would make the perfect gift.
  14. Red Tory Burch Tote–The slender handles and gold logo hardware keep this handy Tory tote looking chic. It’s a perfect carry on for all those Jet-setting friends and family of yours. So put this under the tree and they will think of you as they travel the world in the year ahead.
  15. Black Leather Gloves with Bow–The darling bow detail and soft leather make these gloves dreamy. I love the feminine styling and it will help your girly-girls look lovely and stay warm all at once.

Taking a Trip but Enjoying the Journey

Posted by

I am taking a short trip today to my parent’s lakehouse to enjoy family for this holiday weekend. And just this morning one of my daily email subscriptions I have spoken about to you before, en*theos, got me to thinking about journeys or more importantly our life’s journey.

The email included an article by Ran Zilca that referenced the Bhagavad Gita, the sacred Hindu script considered to be one of the most important texts in literature and philosophy and it also referenced the Tao Te Ching, written by Lao Tzu, the father of Taoism. Both of these works are familiar to me because they are often referenced in the practice of yoga and by my favorite spiritual thought leaders including Wayne Dyer. And it is actually on my “to do” list to read them both in their entirety–I guess you can say it’s on my bucket list.

And that brings me to the point I am trying to make here. We spend a lot of time thinking about our future. What we want to cross off our “bucket list” or even what we “should” be doing in this life. And we often get more preoccupied with the destination we are trying to get to rather than enjoying the journey. And sure, we have all heard “Enjoy the journey”, or “the journey IS the destination”. But I can’t say that it really sunk in for me until this morning. Here’s what what Ran said that gave me my Ah-ha!

(from the Bhagavad Gita)…
You have a right to your actions,
but never to your actions’ fruits.
Act for the action’s sake.
And do not be attached to inaction.
Self-possessed, resolute, act
without any thought of results,
open to success or failure.
This equanimity is yoga.
It’s hard to find text that encapsulates so much wisdom in so few words. Inner peace comes when your reward is simply being proactive, liberated from preoccupation with future results.  You just go on the road and enjoy the ride, leaving your comfort zone to face the challenges of being out there. When you do that, results follow, but perhaps not the way you’d expected. As Lao Tzu, the father of Taoism wrote in the Tao Te Ching:
the more we don’t desire something,
the greater the chance of getting it,
and all the more exciting.

So there it is…another epiphany for me. It’s not just about enjoying the journey while still keeping your eye on the ball of the destination. It is forgetting the destination completely and the reward itself is just taking the journey.

Talk about living in the present! Can you do that? Not sure that I can, but my heart and my gut sure want to try. Can you begin to practice creating your goals simply for the joy in the journey itself? Can you write a book because you really are fulfilled by writing, not because it will make you loads of money and bring you fame? Can you design a room even if it is never published because of the sheer joy and fulfillment of creating a successful and meaningful space? Can you get healthy and change your habits just to make yourself well and whole each day, not to fit into a certain dress or swimsuit or impress another person?

I recently read in The 4-hour Work Week this profound statement…

“Time without attention means nothing, so value attention over time.”

It made me think of my daughter. And it made me realize that just being with her and not giving her my undivided attention (which I have done so many times) because I am working, or on my phone or iPad, is the same as not being with her at all. In fact, it is actually worse, because it reinforces to her that she is less important than all these electronics. Or she is less important than the person on the phone. And why would I ever want her to think anything is more valuable to me than she is? Yikes! What a gut check, right?

So I think all these ideas come full-circle for me today. It is not just about enjoying the journey. It is about being 100% present in the journey knowing all the while that if nothing comes from the journey but the journey itself, it was more fulfilling than any future result we could ever imagine and strive for. And if valuing those on the journey with you by giving them time AND attention is your only success, then what a blessed life you have had. It’s like the Tao Te Ching says…The more we don’t desire something, the greater the chance of getting it and all the more exciting.

Will you enjoy the ride? Will you leave the “baggage” of your past and your future and just live for today giving both time AND attention to the people and the moments that are most important to you?

Remember my resolution for this year to “Collect Moments, Not Things”. Well things are the destination and the moments are the journey.

Wishing you a safe and happy weekend with family and friends and hoping you enjoy the ride!

Remember the room that I designed for Traditional Home in the Holiday Showhouse in NYC?

It appears as a set in a Justin Timberlake video!!!!!!! So now I can add “Hotshot Music Video Set Designer” to my resume. You can watch the video below. My room (sans furnishings but still decked-out in this gorgeous Phillip Jeffries wallcovering) is the room in the shot, starting at minute 4:10. This is so cool and exciting.

Cheers to Phillip Jeffries and their Union Square grasscloth for this amazing cameo! Here’s a close-up of Union Square:

Lovely, am I right?!

On another note (pun intended!), a handful of #HPMKT style spotters and trend watchers have created playlists in anticipation of High Point this month! You can find all of them HERE.

My own playlist is themed “Gold Standard,” and you can play it here (see the playlist right under my signature?), courtesy of Spotify and #HPMKT! I hope it gets your toes a-tappin’. Enjoy!

It Ain’t Easy Being GREEN!: Pantone Color Forecasting

Posted by

Oh. My. Goodness! Can you believe that as of TODAY we are only TWO WEEKS away from 2013?!?! And you already know how much I love New Year’s resolutions and turning over new leaves and any chance to make a fresh start, right? So it’s no surprise that I also like New Year trend predictions…especially COLOR trend predictions!

You can read all about the Pantone color of 2013, Emerald, and how I’ve incorporated bold greens into lots of design projects over the years in my latest installment of “Color Confidential” over at the At Home in Arkansas’ blog.

I’m extra-excited THIS year, because…well…it’s a GREEN. And green is very possibly my signature color (man! I wish there were some way to type that with a Steel Magnolia’s drawl!). When I speak in public or appear at events  people are always surprised if I wear any other color, so it’s become a kind of joke around here.

Maybe it’s just because of these headshots…

Or just because I love to collect jadeite…

Or probably just because my own home has a splash of green or two…

Or, uh, well…maybe my daughter is under the GREEN influence, too?

Well, fine! I have a green addiction! Does that mean it’s ok to act surprised if Santa brings me something special in GREEN this year?

For more green-spiration from me, visit my Pinterest board: Green With Envy!

And if YOU have a talent for forecasting color trends…you’re in luck! TODAY is your last day to enter the Olioboard contest to win great prizes, including a ticket to a Camp Tobi Fairley event and a Benjamin Moore Paint Prize Pack! It’s also your last chance to cast a vote for your favorite entries, so go and enter to WIN!

p. s. It’s not too late to give the gift of Designer MBA, our signature Camp Tobi Fairley event on the basics of the business of design! And, since it’s the season for giving, I’m extending the Bring a Friend for FREE offer for our January 8-10 session. That’s the very last time you’ll see such a good price on Designer MBA in 2013! So drop a hint! Or buy for a friend and tag along! You’ll be giving the gift of success! Click HERE to learn more!
