Do You Know Your Design ABCs?

Posted by

As you know, I have a very exciting Fall planned, and I would be doing us all a major disservice if I let all of these events come and go without really clarifying for you exactly what each one is all about. Today, let me tell you about Design A-to-Z!

impact

Learn where and how to use a bright color or bold pattern to make a MAJOR impact!

Design A-to-Z is my one signature offering that appeals to designers and design lovers alike! It is a great fit for anyone who really has a PASSION for great design and anyone who wants to learn my own system for design that I use for each and every one of my projects. This isn’t a basic or generic course in any way. It is like being right there in the design workroom along side me as I show you how I REALLY create a room from top to bottom, the Tobi way.

Learn how repurposing can be chic (without even a touch of shabby)!

Design A-to-Z is also not just a lot of lecturing or guest speakers touching on a variety of topics. It is my step-by-step, how to program that works for designing a single space or an entire home.

It’s kind of like “Decorating 101” in that we cover all of the fundamentals, from creating floor plans that function, how to use color, texture, and finishes in a way that is visually interesting and exciting but not chaotic right down to nuts and bolts like how much space to allow for each guest at a dinner table. It includes core concepts that I learned in design school plus many practical and clever things I have learned in more than 15 years on the job. And then we take it up a notch to my most trusted tips and techniques that keep my design business at the top of its game and get me published in top shelter magazines time and again.

mood

Learn how to use color, fabric texture, and furniture finishes to create exactly the mood you want in a space.

But ask anyone who has attended and they will tell you it’s also so much more than a simple how-to guide; by working with me you’ll learn how to ask questions and push the limits of what’s possible in design. That confidence is the essential ingredient—or “special sauce”—for creating those magazine-gorgeous interiors! I will empower you to design outside your comfort zone, and that is what is going to make designing exciting and fulfilling AND give you stunning results. We’ve had designers who have been in the business for years attend my A-to-Z event and get totally re-inspired to up-level their design techniques when they thought maybe their design career was coming to an end. And we’ve had design enthusiasts or beginners in the industry walk away from A-to-Z with everything they needed to know to design their own homes or clients homes more creatively than they could have ever imagined.

personality

Learn how to use custom pieces to make a room reflect the unique personality of the residents.

And don’t worry if you have never designed a thing or space in your life. Design A-to-Z is for ALL levels. And I really mean that. If you walk away with just ONE great idea that makes your project function better, look better, or feel better, it would be worth it right? And I can assure you that you will walk away with so much more than that. We have found that whatever level you currently are–novice to pro–there are many amazing takeaways from this camp that will have you designing at a skill level at which you’ve never designed before. Here’s what a few of our former attendees from a variety of levels had to say…

“I do not know exactly what it was that drew me to this camp other than Tobi’s darling personality and style. I was so surprised to find out that I could learn so much in [a] day. Tobi is a very patient teacher and such a vibrant and talented designer that I returned to Dallas with a fresh excitement and new ideas for my projects.”

“I have always been able to create beautiful spaces, but to actually understand the true science of the process is invaluable. What I once did basically by trial and error, I feel confident that now, after only [a few] hours of your instruction, I can do quickly, efficiently and with much more cohesiveness than ever before. I can’t thank you enough. This was just IT!!”

“I can’t tell you how many times I have labored over fabric combinations or paint choices, but after our first [session], I completely understood and could utilize the methodology, and that is just one example of many I could cite.Thank you for helping me, I can’t wait to see what happens next!”

“What is so  incredibly impressive though is your willingness to share. You take areas of design that are just scary to me (like sketching) and walk me thru the process so that I am not only comfortable, I can now  actually utilize this skill!”

colorpalette

Learn all about creating a dynamic color palette and how to anchor it with neutrals for a bright and bold result that doesn’t overwhelm the senses.

Attending one of my intensive trainings is also kind of like a “retreat” for people who eat, sleep, and breathe design! Don’t get me wrong…we’re going to be working hard, but you’ll meet fellow design enthusiasts and professionals who speak the same language as you. And you’ll get to stay in touch with them after you leave because everyone who attends Design A-to-Z becomes a member of a Facebook forum that’s made up of ONLY people who have attended a Tobi Fairley event! It’s not only a great place to ask questions and seek support; we ALSO aren’t going to let you slide back into your comfort zone because we’re going to keep pushing you and lifting you higher!

So I know we will learn so much when she joins us for Design A-to-Z!

Kitchen 6518

You probably saw the chalkboard doors on the pantry in my Breakfast Room in yesterday’s post. My family and I love this FUN feature and it’s “FUN-ctional” too!

I am thinking about painting a very long wall in the sunroom of my new home (yes, we’re moving in a few weeks) with Chalkboard paint, which got me thinking of all the FUN things you can do with this clever paint finish.

Here are a few of the Fun and Fabulous options I found on Pinterest. Which ones do you love?

DIY Chair Contest Winner Announced!

DIY CHAIR CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Back in November I announced a DIY Chair Make-over contest with the winner receiving 1 yard of the Tobi Fairley Home fabric of their choice!  There were lots of really great entries and it was fun huddling with my staff looking at all of the amazing DIY projects y’all submitted.

In the end, there was a clear standout among the entries.  Here’s a look at the before image:

Our contest winner said she found this flea market find for $50.  She’s been told it’s a 1960s Sears knock-off of a Milo Baughman design.

You won’t believe the transformation our winner made to this chair that had seen better days!

The chair was reupholstered in a laundered linen.  Wow!  What a difference!  Can you believe how fabulous this chair looks, especially juxtaposed with the rustic table? I’m officially jealous and wish that it was mine! It even has my initial on it already, right?

In addition to reupholstering the chair, a detachable monogrammed casement was printed with a custom logo.  The printing was done by a local screen printer for only $15!

A big round of applause to the winner of my first DIY contest, Sharon Taylor of A Lifestyle Thing and Sharon Taylor Designs!  (And great photos by Heather Cherie Photography)

Sharon, I hope you enjoy your free yard of fabric from Tobi Fairley Home! I can’t wait to see which one you select.

Congratulations and thanks to all of you who entered.   xo, Tobi
