Fun Video Interviews from Lamps Plus!

Posted by

Just yesterday I was sharing on my monthly #DesignerMBA Twitter Chat how important it is to know what your goals are for building authentic relationships at industry events! And one really fun and exciting connection I made at the Design Bloggers Conference this year was Lamps Plus — they are a team with such great energy!

They interviewed me about my advice to new designers, what I have going on in the near future, and how I approach lighting in my designs. To get my answers, see the video below!

And for a bit of extra fun, they asked a bunch of designers what rules they love to break! I give my answer in this video, along with lots of other designers including Susanna Salk and Scot Meacham Wood who are joining me for Design A to Z in May, back by popular demand! Listen to what everyone said:

I hope you enjoyed these! Tomorrow, I’ll be bringing you the things I’m most excited about as I depart for High Point market!

Design Bloggers Conference Highlights

Posted by

In case you haven’t heard, Design Bloggers Conference 2012 was a blast!

Now that I’ve had a few days to let all the awesomeness sink in, I wanted to share a few highlights with you! I had such an amazing time catching up with old friends and making new ones along the way!

Brooke (my VP of Sales) and me with my dear friend Ronda Carman of All the Best blog. Yes, we all got the memo on wearing stripes…ha!

First, the keynote speakers were amazing! Bunny Williams and Martyn Lawrence Bullard were both OUTSTANDING! Brooke, was lucky enough to snap this cute pic of she and Bunny.

There were also some pretty amazing parties, including the Traditional Home and Kravet party to celebrate the 10 New TRAD designers.

This was the place to be — look at all these fabulous folks we got to catch up with at the party!

Me with Jamie Rummerfield and Ron Woodson of Woodson and Rummerfield.

So fun to see past and present New TRAD Design winners and, of course, the brilliant Ann Maine!

And I always LOVE the opportunity to catch up with anyone that’s been to Design Camp or is currently participating in Mastermind! How fabulous are these ladies?!?

Finally, (drum roll, please!), I have to mention once again what a HUGE, HUGE HONOR it is to be named “Best Overall Design Blog.” I was shocked and humbled and overcome with emotion to receive this award. I want to say a big, heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you. It certainly wouldn’t have been possible without you all! I appreciate all of your support!

Day 2: Pandora

Posted by

It’s Day 2, so I thought I would tell you about two things I love…no, these posts will not be growing exponentially for the rest of the month!

Whenever someone asks if I’m a fan of Pandora, I say “yes,” without ever stopping to ask if they’re talking about the radio service or the bracelet! Why? Because I’m a big-time fan of both!

Why I love them: I’m a huge believer that music inspires creativity, so I am constantly listening to Pandora.

Whether it’s direct through my laptop or on my iPhone through their amazing app. What’s not to love about a personalized radio station? From Melody Gardot to Today’s Hits, there’s something for everyone on this Fab music site.

Speaking of personalization, that’s also the reason I love today’s second item, Pandora bracelets.

Yes, some of the ads on TV are a bit cheesy for this add-a-charm bracelet.  But there is nothing cheesy about the fact that my mom started one of these for me a few years back and my sweet 6-year-old has selected every charm since to remind me of her.  It is one of my most cherished treasures.

From a soccer ball to school books to a sweet little “honey bunny”, at every glance of my wrist, I am reminded of my most precious gift, my daughter. And just in case I were to forget that I turned the Big 4-0 last week, she selected these number charms as a reminder…so funny!

Want something a bit more hip but still sentimental, I also really love their braided bracelets too. They’re such a fun alternative to the regular charm ones.

Where to find them:

Pandora Radio Service,

Pandora Bracelets,

P.S. Remember to vote for Tobi’s Blog as “Best Overall Design Blog” in the Design Bloggers Conference Hall of Fame. I am so honored to be included on this list!! Thanks to those of you who have already voted!

Ask Tobi: Design Bloggers Conference and Contest

Posted by

Q: Hi Tobi, I am interested in both design and social media and want to learn more about blogging trends and how to gain an audience. Are there any resources I should try? I would love any insight! You make it all look so easy. Thanks!

-Michelle; Roswell, Georgia

A: Thanks for your question, Michelle. Since starting the blog more than four years ago, it has truly been a labor of love for me! Not only is it a great outlet to share more about our projects and the new ideas and products I have discovered, I have also truly enjoyed connecting with our readers and helping to solve your design dilemmas.

With that being said, I have turned to several different outlets to help grow and maintain the blog. Since you have an interest in design, I would highly recommend signing up for the Design Blogger’s Conference.

Now is the perfect time to register, too. If you sign up by January 15, you’ll get the Early Bird Rate and save $100! This is such a great event whether you’re a blogger that wants to expand your reach or you have a passion for design and you’re just getting started. The agenda is loaded with reports on this year’s design trends, insights to help grow your followers and generate income, as well as opportunities to network with sponsors and share your blog. And I am excited to once again be speaking at this fantastic conference with several of my “all-star” blogger friends. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this two-day event.

Oh, and did I mention it’s in sunny Los Angeles at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel? These cold winter days are making that sound better all the time.

I am also thrilled to share that “Tobi’s Blog” has been nominated for Best Overall Design Blog by the Design Bloggers Conference Hall of Fame. Our entire office was literally jumping for joy when we heard this good news.

Now, all our readers have the chance to help us win this prestigious award by voting in the online contest. Thanks to those of you who have already voted! If you haven’t, please help us out — it only takes a minute.

I hope to see you all in LA at the conference this February!

Happy Blogging!
