Tobi TV: 5 Tips for Faux Bois

Posted by

I usually have a firm policy of “Just Say No to Faux” – there is nothing like the real thing in most cases. But just like with any design rule, there’s always an exception.

For example, I love a good faux bois! What is faux bois? It’s French for “fake wood” which is exactly what it is, a fake wood or woodgrain. In fact, I love this design motif so much that I used it in one of my fabric designs for my Duralee collection!

The faux bois I used in the Jack and Jill bathroom for my Riverside Penthouse project is actually hand painted on the walls, giving this room a gorgeous textured look. Here are a few tips that tell you why I think faux bois is a real design winner:

Isn’t that a fun room? Let’s recap the fabulous faux bois ideas:

  1.  Faux bois brings in an element of nature, which makes everyone and everything feel fresh and alive.
  2. Faux bois gives the impression of texture that can really amp up a space.
  3. The woodgrain look is also gender neutral, and here I used it in neutral tones. So it works well with any color, and in any room.
  4. Try getting a local artist to hand paint your faux bois to keep your space budget-friendly.
  5. You don’t have to worry about the trendiness of faux bois, it’s a classic finish that is always in style!

So what do YOU think about this wood-like look? Let me know in the comments section below!

4 Ideas for Metropolitan Style

Posted by

Modern design enthusiasts may think they will only find “big city” style in places like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago. But you can get the chic and sleek look you crave, no matter where you live.

Right here in Little Rock, Ark., I harnessed that city style for my Riverside Penthouse project, and I’m going to show you exactly how you can use these ideas to give your space a modern look and feel.

That entryway is metro marvelous! Here’s another look at a few tips that will give you a lot of big city style:

  1. Think glam: A velvet and vinyl banquette will definitely add that sophisticated city look to your home. It’s perfect for entertaining or having a few friends over for cocktails.
  2. A gorgeous marbelized wall covering in every shade of blue from cobalt to ink will make your space feel penthouse perfect. And it offers ready-made art, as well!
  3. Black-and-white striped marble floors would make a jailhouse rock – and the high-gloss makes them super-chic.
  4. Blue suede doors would make Elvis proud – add some glass doorknobs and they are definitely fit for a King.

A great city view is a bonus, but even if you live in the suburbs, these tips will help you feel like you’re living large in the big city.

Stay colorful!

So many things inspire the color palette for a room, from art to fabrics to wallpaper. And wallpaper is exactly where I found the gorgeous hunter green for the painted walls in this penthouse dining room!

This custom de Gournay wallpaper is just stunning! My client absolutely fell in love with it, and it inspired all the other colors in the room, including the Sherwin-Williams hunter green paint color called Rookwood Sash.

I love this shade of green, and it was the perfect complement to the wallpaper, so I used it on the other walls in the space. The mix of color and pattern makes this a very fashion-forward dining room, perfect for my hip and chic client!

Do you like hunter green? Where would you use this color in your home? Let me know in the comments section below!

Colorfully yours,

Tobi TV: 5 Ways to Balance Masculine and Feminine Design

Posted by

Tobi-TV-logo-600x332

I love to design rooms that are balanced, whether that’s balancing scale, proportion, or the details that can make a room too “girly” or too “manly.” Many of my clients want that balance of masculine and feminine in their master suite, so it feels like a room they will both love.

If you can perfect that balance then, no matter which you prefer, you can find something to love in the room. Here are my top 5 tips for achieving that great balance:

What do you think? Do you see how the room is more cohesive because of those ideas? Let’s review them:

  1. Use the color palette to achieve both design ideas. Here, I wrapped the room in masculine shades of gray from the lighter linen color to the darker charcoal. And then I popped in a bit of a more feminine orange with the sherbet colored toile.
  2. Pattern and texture help mix the feminine and the masculine. In this room, the handsome textured solids and geometrics like the grasscloth wallcovering lean towards the masculine, and then the floral toile in a linen texture blends in a bit more feminine sensibility.
  3. Shape and form are a great way to bring in both the yin and yang of masculine and feminine energy in a space. The glamorous curves of the overscaled wing chairs and the shapely and tall headboard are more feminine, and the sleek and simple lines of the sofa, the ottoman, and other straight-lined pieces in the room bring the masculine in, too.
  4. Don’t forget art as a way to mix both ideas into your space. The abstract art in this room is decidedly more masculine, while the flowers and feminine figure in the photography certainly lean more feminine.
  5. And finally, use a statement piece or two to sway the emotion and feeling of a space one way or the other on the masculine-feminine scale. The smart and tailored orange chest definitely gives a masculine punch to the room.

I hope you loved these design ideas for making any master bedroom work for anyone and everyone who uses it! And I hope you’ll share this video with all your design-loving friends who may need help designing for more than one person in their space. Do leave me a comment and let me know what tips I’ve given here resonated with you, or if you have any other great ideas for making a master bedroom, or any room, fit the needs of all who use it.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ve seen a couple of sneak peeks behind the door of my new house! I want to show you everything, but I have something cooking that will offer a grander reveal in a few months. It’s hard to keep all of it under wraps, though, because I love living in the new house – with gorgeous details like these stunning doors in my signature kelly green!

And of course I’m using blue – another of my favorite colors. I love how it’s mixed with the green hues in this stunning wallpaper from Fromental.

The wet bar, with an amazing counter from Cosentino and sink from Kohler, turned out even better than I thought it would! We’ve been mixing up some fun summer cocktails in here.

And I may have surprised a few of you with the lovely combination of yellows and pinks in this room, with a Jan Showers lamp and Clark and Clark wallpaper. Can’t wait to give you the full reveal on this room. In fact, I can’t wait to give you a full tour of the whole home!

Meanwhile, keep checking my Instagram feed for a few more looks behind the door – I can’t help myself!
