Love, Baking, and Mother’s Day

Posted by

Not much “feeds” my soul like being in the kitchen. I have been cooking since I was less than 10 – and today cooking is my therapy and an escape from the whirlwind of my design and consulting business. I loved cooking with my mother when I was younger and still today on holidays, and now my own daughter loves to cook and bake with me! It’s a way that the three of us can connect and make memories. We enjoy getting into the kitchen and cooking for our families because food is definitely a way we Southerners show love to those important people in our lives!

This weekend is Mother’s Day, and I know all three of us will be in the kitchen creating treats for each other, like we always do. But this year, Ellison and I have a fabulous new kitchen for our culinary creations! For my home remodel, I put Thermador at the top of my shopping list for all my appliances. They give me the functional and fabulous tools I need to concoct amazing dishes, food gifts, and meals for all my family.

We took advantage of my gorgeous new kitchen to create a Mother’s Day video for Thermador, showcasing how much fun we have together when we’re cooking and baking and hanging out at home! I am clearly not as cool as she is, but I’m just glad that my almost seventh-grader still wants to be with me, especially in the kitchen.  Just click here to see what kind of craziness we serve up when we’re together!

I wish all of you moms out there a very special Mother’s Day and I hope you’re making amazing memories with your little ones (and not-so-little ones) in the kitchen, too!

Being Smart with Art

Posted by

There’s one part of a room’s decor that is critical to setting the mood and enhancing the design – the art! I love to select art that fits the mood of a room and my client’s personality. And using original art as often as possible also keeps the design unique and personal.

I love to support emerging artists and Minted is one great resource for those artists online! And yes, you may think of Minted more for their stationery. I know – I love that, too. They have been making my annual Valentine’s card (which I do instead of Christmas) for the last several years, and the designs and quality are amazing.

But now, I can choose Minted not just for my personal stationery needs, but for my design work because they now have a terrific trade program for interior designers. Minted has original art by hundreds of independent artists and they offer the pieces in limited-edition runs. But you’re also able to customize the size, colorway, and framing on many pieces. You can even commission completely original art!

And I recently used this amazing service to get the absolutely perfect piece for my daughter’s room. She is my little baker and her favorite quote is by Julia Child. She was so excited when Minted already had it in their line in the Typography collection. And being able to get it in the color and size we needed made it the perfect finishing touch for her room.

If you aren’t a designer that’s eligible for their trade program, you can still find incredible paintings, drawings and photographs on Minted here. They’ll even give you styling tips and ideas for hanging art! It’s like having your own gallery expert on hand.

Do you love original and limited-edition art as much as I do? And how do you use art in your home? Let me know in the comments section below!

Instagram Inspiration: All Steamed Up

If you’ve read this blog for any time at all, you know how much I LOVE to cook and bake! It’s my stress reliever, and something that I can do with my daughter, who is an amazing baker on her own. So you can imagine how happy I was over the Thanksgiving holiday to be in my newly renovated kitchen with all my fabulous Thermador appliances.

Last year on a visit to Thermador’s Experience & Design Center in California, I fell in love with their steam oven. No really, I wanted to take it home with me in my bag! So you can bet I put that at the top of my shopping list when I bought the new appliances for my home.

Now that I’m using it regularly, it’s even more functional and convenient than I thought it would be – it’s like the Swiss Army Knife in my culinary toolbox! I’m also learning that it can do SO much more than create healthy steamed meals and reheat leftovers, although it’s fabulous for that, too.

My favorite thing to do in the kitchen is bake, especially with my daughter. We love to create cupcakes, pies, and breads for friends and family, like the pumpkin pound cake that I made above. The Thermador steam oven makes our baked goods moist and yummy.

I gave the steam oven a workout at Thanksgiving – it’s large enough to cook several vegetable dishes on separate racks at one time, or to cook a 14-pound turkey. And it cooked my Thanksgiving turkey in just 2 hours! That really took the holiday pressure off. And let me tell you, doing that bacon lattice work on the turkey was delicious, too!

Thermador’s steam oven is now the star of my kitchen – giving me restaurant-worthy results every time. I may have to consider opening up to the public and taking reservations! What’s your favorite appliance in your kitchen? Let me know in the comments section below!

Instagram Inspiration: A Cook’s Dream

We’re just two weeks from Thanksgiving and the fun of cooking for family and baking for the holidays – something I absolutely love! It’s my stress relief and the way this Southern girl shows her love. Having my new kitchen this year is going to make it an even more fabulous experience and I can’t wait to get in there with my daughter to whip up treats like the mini bundt cakes she made above. She’s quite a baker all on her own!

If you’re following me on Instagram, you know I’ve found a lot of cooking inspiration from Blue Apron. The meals they’ve sent have taught me new techniques and ideas that I’m going to try for my holiday cooking!

But what really has me excited about getting into the kitchen are all of the fabulous new Thermador appliances we’ve installed, like my gorgeous new range above. I may be their brand ambassador today, but I’ve been a long-time believer in their brand and appliances. In fact, I grew up eating the delicious meals and treats my mom created on her Thermador range! Making pancakes is so much fun on the stove-top griddle – it’s the kind of Thermador innovation that a real cook like me loves!

If my daughter continues to make delicious treats like the chocolate lava meringue cupcakes she made above, though, I’m going to have to break out another great machine in my kitchen…

Thank goodness I’m a huge fan of juicing! It will help me keep some balance in this fun and crazy holiday season! What are your favorite traditions and dishes for the holidays? Let me know in the comments section below.

Happy Cooking!
