New House Diary: Dining Room Storage

New House Diary

I told you a few weeks ago that the surest way to send me to my “happy place” in my home is to have plenty of storage! So you may think that storage in the dining room isn’t the most exciting thing to talk about for my new home, but for me, it’s not only important but fun to plan!

I also happen to have a lot of china and large collections of oyster plates, cake stands, hobnail, and jadeite, some of which you can see in my old dining room above. I actually use my collections all the time, so I want to store them and also display some pieces. But I want them all organized and easy to access for regular use.

My friend and fab interior designer Billy Ceglia designed a dining room that has storage behind the panels of the walls. Yes – those gorgeous panels – including the ones with art over them – open up to reveal amazing shelves for china and crystal! That’s one really creative option that I think is phenomenal!

I also like to use buffets and chests in the dining room, both for storage and to provide extra surfaces for light sources like lamps. Buffets are perfect for hiding away stacks of plates that are essential to a dining room, your good silver, and other serveware that you don’t really want on display.

Functional pieces, like my Denise dining table from Woodbridge that’s shown above, could also give some creative extra storage space in a small home or in rooms that you need to be multipurpose. That fabulous shelf under the table would be great for serving platters and other items if space is at a premium for you.

china hutch

And a china hutch is a great place to hold tons of china, crystal, platters and serveware. This formal dining room of one of my favorite clients has a gorgeous hutch stocked full of china that is necessary when entertaining at her dining table for 18. In my own china hutch, I love just piling things in and stacking it all up to maximize storage. If you’re looking for a new china cabinet, I have a beautiful new piece coming out this spring in my Woodbridge collection that could be perfect for you, so stay tuned for that!

tobi storage

As you can see in the image above from my last home’s butler’s area in my kitchen that was right outside my dining room, I have lots to store. So finding storage solutions for all my entertaining supplies is really a must for a hostess who loves to entertain like I do.

So what do you think about storage in the dining room? Do you have any great ideas or tips for adding function to the dining room? Let me know in the comments section below! I look forward to showing you my selections soon!
