Tobi TV: 5 Tips for Fun Kids Rooms with Personality

Posted by

Kids’ rooms are some of the most fun spaces to design in a home! I love to fill them with color and character to fit each child’s personality, which also gives them more ownership over their own space.

In my farmhouse project that’s featured in the April issue of Traditional Home, I had a lot of kids’ rooms to choose from! It was a blast to create individual spaces for a range of ages and personalities. In this Tip Clip from Traditional Home, I give you five great tips for designing fun and functional spaces for the children in your life!

Aren’t those fun rooms? Let’s take another look at my tips for creating fun kids’ spaces:

1. I had individual silhouettes created for each child in the family, and then hung the art next to each bedroom door. It was a great way to highlight every child in the family!

2. One young lady has a more tailored style, so I created a preppy room in green and blue to fit her personal look.

3. For a fashionista in the family, I added glamour with an unexpected color mix of purple and red!

4. Rustic touches and a blue and red palette set the perfect stage for an outdoorsy boy.

5. And I designed this little girl’s room in her favorite shade of pink, but kept it from being too sweet by adding in jadeite green!

Using colors, patterns, and ideas that fit each child’s personality gives them a space that’s definitely all their own! Let me know what you think in the comments section below!

Tobi TV: 5 Ways That Purple Rules

I’m known for using color – so much so that my brand is Bright, Bold, and Tailored. So let’s look at a room this week that I saturated with a bright and bold color. Purple is such a great color to work with, and I love every hue from luxurious, rich purples like royal and plum to paler shades like lavender and periwinkle.

Color psychology says that purple stimulates the imagination and spirituality, which made it the ideal color for the study in my Riverside Penthouse project. I know that, for some, working with color can be intimidating, so here are my tips for pulling off purple:

Oh, I so love that color! Let’s recap those tips for purple:

  1. Purple is great for the bold and daring decorator. It can create a dark, cozy place that is perfect for curling up with your favorite book or magazine.
  2. Purple is an ideal color if you’re letting your fabrics lead the way. Pick the perfect purple textiles and go from there!
  3. If you’re inspired by fashions from Europe, then purple is perfect for you! Moody hues like purple and blue create an amazing continental look.
  4. Small spaces can use a rich hue like purple, too! It will create the jewel box effect and turn your space into a gem.
  5. If you’re a movie buff, purple definitely brings the drama!

Talk about stimulating the imagination! These tips should have you ready to paint your world purple! Let me know in the comments below where you like to use purple.

Wishing you a happy, and colorful, New Year!

What Is That Color? Lavender Love

I love designing rooms for kids, to give them a space that’s all their own and makes them feel special! So when I began to create this room for a fabulous little girl, I wanted to be sure it reflected who she was. She likes some feminine things, but she isn’t too girlie, so I knew the decor needed to reflect that. And once I found that fabulous toile on the window treatments, I knew I had a great color palette, too!

The paint color is Enchant by Sherwin-Williams, and it strikes that perfect balance between soft but not too sweet. And I loved it paired with the black and white combination of complementary colors – that really kept it grounded and sophisticated for this grown-up girl!

So what do you think of this lovely lavender? Would you use purple in one of your rooms? Tell me why or why not in the comments section below!

Colorfully yours,

Before and After: Bonus Room to Beautiful Bedroom

A few weeks ago, I talked about transforming a basement, and how all that extra space can be turned into a gorgeous and functional space. Many of you also may have that extra space in an upper floor, like in a “bonus room” or a big room over the garage. Sometimes those can just be a catch-all for extra furniture, and storage for things we aren’t using at the moment. And that’s exactly what happened for a client of mine.

They had a big space on an upper floor that was kind of a kids’ playroom, and kind of a storage area. And like a lot of my design clients, they had a turning point in their lives that was pushing them towards using this space for something else! Their daughter was getting older and was ready for her own “big girl” room – and I wanted to give her one that was fun and worked for her!

Like I do with all of my clients’ children, I sat down with her and talked about what her favorite activities were, what colors she really liked, and what she wanted to have that was special in her room. That way, we could take this room that was full of odd angles and blank walls and really give her something amazing!

She loves purple and pink – so I made sure I gave her plenty of both, along with playful florals that weren’t too “little girl.” I wanted this room to grow with her and I included a few more sophisticated things, like the stools at the end of the bed. And of course all that white fabric is treated so she didn’t have to worry about spills and stains.

And for this fun nook on the other side of the room, I wanted to give her a little sitting area where she could sit and read, hang out with friends, or just play!

There’s also a homework station, and lots of storage for all of her toys, books, and clothing! It’s organized and fun at the same time.

So what do you think of this transformation from bonus space to bright bedroom? Let me know in the comments section below!

What Is That Color? Vibrant Periwinkle

Nothing creates glamour like saturating a room with color – yes, all one color on the trim, ceiling, walls, cabinetry, and shelves! This is a great design look that works best on smaller contained rooms, like this study, or in a powder room or library. What really took this room for my Riverside Penthouse project to the next bold level was the high gloss finish I added, along with color-matched upholstery!

So what is this color that looks purple in some light and blue in others? It’s a periwinkle hue by Sherwin-Williams and it has the perfect name – Mesmerize! I absolutely drenched the study in this gorgeous color and added in touches of yellow, the complementary color for periwinkle. The great effect that all this color has is to make the room both sophisticated and cozy at the same time, a perfect result for my fashion-forward clients!

What do you think of this bright and bold color choice? Would you go all-in with one color like this? Let me know in the comments section below!
