My 2018 Word of the Year

Posted by

Happy 2018! It is here. A fresh start. This is the beginning of anything you want.

And I know what I want. I have been choosing a word of the year for the past 6 years, this year is #7. It’s one of my favorite New Year’s traditions and it’s instrumental in guiding my choices and path for the 12 months ahead. Over the years I have chosen the words Discipline, Inspire, Action, Significance, Focus and Joy. Each time I chose the perfect word and that’s not by accident, I go through a very thorough process to make sure I get the word just right.

This year, I am in a far different place than I have ever been. I’ve accomplished a lot of my goals in the last 19 years of owning my business and 15 years of marriage. Life is good. But staying in my comfort zone isn’t how I roll. So it’s time for some major shifts. Time to shake things up. Time to dial down on what I want. Change is super exciting to me, but also scary, which helps me know something big is happening in my life.

Maybe it’s my age. I will soon turn 46, on the downhill side of my 40’s. There is something about your 40’s and being at mid-life and having a teenager and all the other things that come with this season of life, that make you look at your world differently. I have a totally different list of what’s important to me than I did in my 20’s and 30’s.

In this season of life, my desire is no longer to make my mark, but rather to make a difference.

I am in a place of balance, a place of peace, a mindset of wellness, with a strong connection to home.  I am ready to serve and nurture and love. I am in a place of dedication to using my gifts and talents and knowledge. I am committed to making my biggest and best contribution to the world yet.

I want to focus on my company and it’s growth internally. I have spent a lot of time working to put my company on the map with social media and public speaking and getting published. Now I want to see where my business can serve people in the biggest way. Who can we help? What can we improve? How can we use our gifts, and talents and knowledge to help others live their best life? Where can we be more streamlined, more profitable, more effective? How can we simplify?

I want to focus on my family and our growth. What can we do to be our best? Who can we help more, serve more, love more? How can we focus more on what’s really important? What life lessons do we need to master this year? How much money can we save? How can we be better to each other, better to our friends, better listeners, better Christians?

I want to focus on myself and my personal growth. What areas still need improvement? What part of my life have I been ignoring? Where have I been holding myself back with fear, or lack of focus, or busy-ness?

And what word will help me stay committed to this streamlined and introspective and focused approach to 2018?  I considered connect, invest, essential, abundance, flourish, peace, balance, cultivate, contentment, mindful, aligned, renew, priority, purpose, shine, worth, value, heart and bloom. I strongly considered grace. And I knew that none of these words exactly captured what I wanted to feel this year.

Yes I am more intentional, more balanced, more simplified and more connected to my priorities than ever before. But I am not looking for a take it easy year. In fact I am looking for the opposite. I am as driven as ever to accomplish my goals this year, but my goals are just different than they’ve ever been. I needed a word that was active and aggressive and committed to the things that are most important to me which is family, health, wealth and joy. And for that reason, I chose…

My life will be different in 2018. I have spent the last 24 months downsizing my big 6000 square foot office to a home-based office, cutting my business expenses by 2/3, and increasing my profit margins by 200%. I have taken my marriage from so-so to on fire. I have gone from feeling like I had very little time for friends, to feeling so connected to more true friends than ever. I have gone from a workaholic who traveled constantly for work, to a mom and wife who is present and connected and my cup is overflowing because of it. The best thing that happened in 2017 is I overheard one of my daughter’s friends say their step-dad was a workaholic and my daughter (not knowing I was listening) said, “Oh my mom used to be one of those”. Be still my heart.

But these changes didn’t mean my business went away, it’s just more dialed in, it’s more intentional, it’s more profitable and it’s more fulfilling than ever before. I didn’t get rid of the important business stuff, I just got rid of everything else. I got rid of the distractions and the mediocre. In 2017, I looked at every potential opportunity under a microscope and the opportunity costs of each one. If it took me away from my family, there was one strike against it. If it made me a ton of money and was inspiring, I would still consider it. If the money or inspiration was marginal but it required travel, it was a no.

And you know what happened…I found that the things that make me THE most money and make THE biggest contributions to the world  can all be done from my home office between the hours of 8 and 3!! And this realization was life changing.

So now armed with my new knowledge for how to create balance, how to be a warrior protecting my schedule like my life depends on it (because it does) and a brand new way of prioritizing so that the things that really matter are where I spend my time, I am ready to THRIVE in 2018.

I will THRIVE :

as a Mom

as a Wife

as a Coach

as a Designer

as a Friend

in Health and Wellness

I am tired of just surviving. I am over barely keeping my head above water. I am done with saying yes to a whole bunch of things that may stroke my ego, but don’t really matter. You know what strokes my ego these days? Feeling rested, energized, connected, loved and helping others feel the same. It strokes my ego to THRIVE!

I believe 2018 will be a good year. In fact, I believe it will be GREAT.

In 2018 my family and I will THRIVE. What will you do?

Bring it, 2018. Let’s do this!

Finding a Coach: Mastermind Topics for 2012

Posted by

Since my posts last week on Resolutions, Plans, and Dreams, many of you have been emailing me about how and where to find a business coach.

I have worked very hard over the years to build my business. But I have had several very talented coaches over the last 10 years that have really helped me take my business to the next level.  Depending on your needs and your budget, you can find coaching locally or nationally.

Here are a few questions to ask when hiring a coach or consultant…

  1. Are they an expert in your industry or segment or more of a general life or business coach? Which of these types is best suited for your needs
  2. Have they helped others in your industry reach their goals?  What is their track record?
  3. Are you priority?  How many clients do they have compared to the number of staff? Are they invested in your success?
  4. How big is the consulting firm?
  5. Is it a turn-key approach to reaching your goals or are you responsible for keeping the process moving?
  6. Is the fee schedule based on deliverables? Can you opt out if deliverables aren’t met?
  7. Is the coach or their support staff easy to access/get in touch with? If you are on a monthly retainer, you will want more access to them.
  8. Is their strategy proposal diverse?? Do they have expertise in each area you want to improve on?
  9. You get what you pay for. Is it too cheap or too good to be true? If you think so, it probably is.  You want to be invested and you want them to be also.
  10. Did they present a detailed proposal with deadlines, goals, objectives, and proposed ROI for your investment?
  11. Do your personalities fit? Do you trust them? Do you get a good feeling?
  12. How did you find them? Referral? Google? Phone book? Saw their name on another successful designer/industry site?

I thought this would also be a good time to remind you about my coaching and consulting services. We have year 2 of our Mastermind Classes kicking off in just a few weeks. We have accomplished so much with our current group over the last year! You can see more details on how our classes work here.

And most importanly, here are the topics I will be covering this year with our Mastermind members. Our 3 on-site sessions at my studio will cover these important topics…

  • Understanding your Finances and Budgeting for Cash Flow

1. Creating new Income streams for increased cash flow
2. Getting Published
3. Hiring, Staffing, and When to grow

5. Creating and Maintaining White Glove Service
6. Taking your Presentation Techniques to the next level

Dream a Little Dream in 2012

Posted by

Well, it’s day 3 of my tour through my 2012 resolutions, plans and dreams. If you’ve been with me this week, you have read my resolutions for the new year. You know what I’m planning to accomplish, and today we are going to take it outside the box, or the “jar” so to speak and talk about my dreams.

It’s a scary thing, even for me, to put my dreams out in the universe. What if people laugh at me, or think I’m stupid, or silly? What if I jinx myself by telling you all what extraordinary wishes are in my head and my heart? Ok…well, so what?!

What do I really have to lose? If I don’t put them out there, they may never happen. If I am not willing to take that lid off the jar that holds my deepest desires, how in the world will the people that can help me achieve them ever even know about them?

What do I have to lose by being vulnerable and authentic and open? Our fears so often hold us back from really going after the things that we dream about, that we visualize, that we yearn for.  Many people would rather be pleasantly surprised if something accidentally happens to them in life, as opposed to taking a chance on being disappointed if they dream of something, go after it, and fail.

I, on the other hand, prefer to leave nothing to chance. I would never want to come to the end of my life and wish I had dreamed bigger and tried harder to make those dreams come true.  I prefer to dream big, plan big, take big risks, work really hard, and celebrate awesome results!

And who cares if people think you are silly or stupid or worse? Apparently Coco Chanel didn’t let what other people thought of her hold her back. So why would we? I say “if Coco can do it, I can too!”

Will I have failures? Sure! Will many of the things I dream, not come to pass? Of Course! But the more I dream and the bigger I dream the more of those dreams I will realize. But you gotta dream big.  I mean REALLY B-I-G!  If you dream about being a billionaire and you only make $100 Million, I don’t think you are going to be too disappointed, do you?

So here they are in no particular order, 20 of my Big, Giant, Hairy, Scary, Dreams…with one extra thrown in for fun.

1. Write a Book…well actually, several.

2. Have an Apartment in New York City

3. Learn to Play the Piano

4. Travel Internationally every year and take my daughter with me

5. Be published in the other “biggies” that I haven’t made it into yet…Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Veranda.

6. Have my own furniture line

7. Have a Summer Home–the Hamptons, a Farm with chickens, or the Beach…I can’t decide.  Maybe I’d like all three!

8.  Have my own TV Show

9. Visit Maison & Objet in Paris

10. Have a Garden…a fabulous one both flower and vegetable.

11. Build a New House in Arkansas

12. Do the Kipps Bay Showhouse

13. Rent a Villa in Italy for a Month, followed by a Month in a Paris Apartment for the Summer with my mama, hubby, and baby girl in tow.

14. Have my own Radio Show

15. Have a house keeper 5 days a week

16. Make enough money to make significant charity donations every year of $25,000 or more (hopefully much more) to help less fortunate people have a more beautiful life.

17. Learn to Speed read so I can get through all the business books on my list

18. Spend 2 weeks in Maui every Winter and a week at Blackberry Farms every Fall.

19. Have my own column in a National Magazine or Newspaper

20. Take Culinary courses to learn to be a great Chef

21. Buy a Birkin Bag in a FABULOUS color!

So there they are. Now that wasn’t so bad, was it? I am ready to see what the Universe does with all this material. I’d be happy with even one of these “Biggies” this year and the good news is…I’m feeling lucky! Come on 2012, mama needs a new pair of shoes (or a house in the Hamptons, or an orange Birkin Bag).

So what are your big dreams this year? Come on, tell us! Put them out here in the Universe and see what happens. What have you got to lose?

Try out this neat course over at Mondo Beyondo starting next Monday if you need some help discovering them. I’ve done their Dream Lab before and believe me, it’s super inspirational.

Happy Dreaming!  xo, Tobi

Happy New Year and a Resolution or Two…

Happy New Year, Friends!

I am so excited to welcome 2012. I think it’s going to be a cupcake year.  By that I don’t mean easy, but one where we are going to live in our “sweet spot” with lots of great “extra” things that come our way just like icing on top!  As I have said many times here on my blog, I just adore the chance to start fresh and to get excited about a whole new set of goals, plans, and dreams. And I can tell you I feel a positive energy this new year coming from all of you like I haven’t felt in a long time. I know it’s true people, 2012 is our year!

So this year I am going to do things a bit differently here on the blog with respect to the new year. I am going to share with you my resolutions, those things I want to work on or implement this year, many of which are personal. But all of which, with some discipline and hard work,  I know I can achieve!

Then I am going to share with you some of my big plans for the year. These are things at home and in business that I am going to do this year, places I am going to visit, and ideas I am going to launch. I’m ready to “Just do it” for this list in 2012 so get ready to roll up your sleeves with me, friends!

And last, I think I will even share with you a few of my dreams.  Those GIANT things that I would just love to accomplish in 2012. This is really a big thing for me to put out there in the universe. Things that one might put on her bucket list, things that we usually only think about but don’t speak of. I am going to put those out there for all of us to read and we will see if I just might get lucky enough in 2012 for some of them to come true. These are that “icing on the cupcake” that I was talking about! I’ve always heard, “put it out there in the universe and the laws of attraction will bring it to you”, well I think I’ll give it a whirl and we can check back 12 months from now and see if it worked.

So I hope you’ll spend the next 3 days with me while I share my Resolutions, Plans, and Dreams.  I also hope you will create these for yourself over these next 3 days.  And if you are willing, I’d love for you to share them with me so we can achieve them together over the next 12 months.

To give you a head-start in preparing to set your goals, here are a few great books, sites and programs that you might want to check out or even sign up for.  I will be using several of these myself over the next year to achieve my goals.

To achieve your Resolutions and Goals, try the 100 Day Challenge .

To make your plans come to life not just this year, but the next 3, try the 3 Year Vision Plan to set you on your way.

To get a little help with your dreaming, the Mondo Beyondo workshop may be just what you need.

And don’t forget two of my all-time favorite books…

The 10 X Rule by Grant Cardone

and Hard Goals by Mark Murphy

Good luck with getting all you want to do this year on paper. I will see you back here tomorrow with my resolutions.

Happy New Year!  xoxo, Tobi

P.S. A special thanks to Jennifer for introducing me to the 3-year vision plan!
