Tobi TV: 5 Ideas to Take Your Rooms from Day to Night

Posted by

I love selecting the perfect outfit for events and when I travel, and a look that will take me from daytime meetings to evening parties is a real winner. Planning that perfect room that will take you from day-to-day living into evening entertaining is equally important! It’s smart to think about the function of a room, and the furniture, as you plan your home design.

The living room in my Riverside Penthouse project, featured in Rue Magazine, is another great example of day-to-night design. It’s perfect for the family during the day, but makes a great statement for evening entertaining. Let’s take a look!

Don’t you just love that space? So fun and functional! Let’s recap those tips for a day-to-night room:

  1. Choose a durable sofa that can withstand the kids during the day and adults (with wine!) at night. The velvet sofa in my client’s home withstood 50,000 double-rubs on the durability test, so I know it will work.
  2. Try a great cocktail table that can hold flowers and incidentals in the daytime but will turn into a bar for evening entertaining.
  3. Choose art for your day-to-night space that will look bright and cheerful during the day, but will lean into moody hues when the sun sets.
  4. A soft and durable rug that the kids can play on in the daytime, and is easy to clean after the party at night, is perfect for a transitional space.
  5. Golden lamps will softly glow during the day and will bring the glam at night!

See? It’s just as easy to plan a room design that moves from daytime to night as it is to plan your day-to-evening outfits! Let me know how you use transition and function in your home by leaving me a comment below!

Tobi TV: 4 Tips for Lighting Up Your Home

Posted by

If there’s one thing that’s critical to your home’s functionality, it’s lighting! There are so many different needs and tasks for light in a home, and you know how frustrating it can be if you don’t have enough light in a room, right?

I like to have a great lighting plan for every project I design, and this farmhouse that’s featured in the April issue of Traditional Home was no different! It has the perfect mix of decorative and task lighting, and I have four tips that will help you light up your rooms, too, so let’s take a look:

1. You always want to have overhead fixtures to flood a room with light when you need it, and there are gorgeous designs from vintage to modern that will help you do just that.

2. You can also use your lamps and light fixtures to add even more color to your spaces, while also providing the perfect amount of light.

3. Task lighting is critical in places where you work, like a kitchen, study, or playroom. And you can also use this type of light fixture to shine a spotlight on your gorgeous art!

4. Sconces give you a chic way to light up hallways and staircases, giving you a safe passage through darker areas.

Use these ideas to light up your home – and let me know what your favorite bright ideas are in the comments section below!

Tobi TV: Tips for Using Trim

Posted by

Tobi-TV-logo-600x332

I love adding embellishments like grosgrain, gimp, and banding to decorative elements in a home to make the space more unique and personalized. It’s a cost-effective way to add a lot of look for not a lot of money!

But don’t think that trimmings have to be fussy or over-the-top, unless you want them to be. I prefer them to be clean-lined, simple, and edited.

So take a look at my latest video and see what you think about my ideas for adding trim to your home.

Let’s take another look at my Tobi’s Top Tricks with Trim  (say that 3 times fast!):

1. Add trim to the leading edge of drapery panels or on all three sides of a valance or roman shade for a bit of detail and interest.

2. Lampshades are the perfect place for flat trims like grosgrain or gimp. These embellishments give your store-bought lampshades a custom look.

3. A tabletop is a great place to have fun with trim. From your napkins to your placemats to the tablecloth, there are many places to add trim to your tabletop to create a more festive soiree.

4. Pillows may be the best place to use trim. You can create geometric details and patterns of your own design, or keep it simpler and just use fringe or tassels on the edges. Whatever your style, adding trim to your pillows can help you make a statement in your interior.

Now’s the time for you to weigh in. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of this video and how you’ve used decorative trims and embellishments in your interior. And if you love this video, please share it with friends who might find my Tobi TV design tips inspirational and helpful in designing their homes.

Happy Trimming!

The Perfect Accessory

Lacquered Box with Agate Rectangle

The perfect accessory can really make or break your outfit – and it’s no different in a room design! This week, as High Point Market guests visit my new collection at CR Laine, we’re getting a lot of questions about the gorgeous accessories we used to complement my upholstery designs. They are from Times Two Design, a great Dallas-based company headed by the amazing Lauren Renfrow.

Glamazon Mineral Slab - Rose Quartz

As you can see, her lamps and accessories are all inspired by organic shapes and materials, like agate, quartz, wood, and malachite. I’m using the agate boxes and rose quartz lamp shown above in my CR Laine room designs, as well as the fabulous barnacle box and Selenite column lamp below.

If you’re here at High Point Market this week, be sure to stop by the Times Two Design space at Suites at Market Square, space M-4012, or you can see their pieces in the CR Laine showroom, 310 N. Hamilton, 2nd floor! They have some fabulous new designs, too, like the malachite box and Starburst lamp below. You can also view even more Times Two Designs on the website, just click here.

I’ll be back from High Point Market later this week, and then I’ll hopefully be back on a more regular blog schedule. Until then, keep your eye out here and on my Instagram and Facebook pages for more sneak peeks from the market!

I’m known for using bright palettes for my designs, but I also love to use soft colors to create serene rooms that are perfect for a relaxing retreat. These spaces are a great place to recharge, and to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of a busy family life.

It could be a bedroom, a study, a library, or even your own yoga room – but we all need a place to get away from the stress of our days. So how can you create your own oasis at home?

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite soft and serene designs!

Don’t you feel calmer already? I know I do! Let’s review those tips for your relaxing room:

1. Try platinum, icy blues, and mirrored surfaces to create a serene bedroom you may never want to leave!

2. Pair relaxing colors with classics like black and white. This pairing is surprisingly calming and fabulously chic.

3. Soft pinks make a great palette for a serene energy like an office or yoga room!

Wishing you a stress-free day!
