Tobi TV: 5 Ideas to Take Your Rooms from Day to Night

Posted by

I love selecting the perfect outfit for events and when I travel, and a look that will take me from daytime meetings to evening parties is a real winner. Planning that perfect room that will take you from day-to-day living into evening entertaining is equally important! It’s smart to think about the function of a room, and the furniture, as you plan your home design.

The living room in my Riverside Penthouse project, featured in Rue Magazine, is another great example of day-to-night design. It’s perfect for the family during the day, but makes a great statement for evening entertaining. Let’s take a look!

Don’t you just love that space? So fun and functional! Let’s recap those tips for a day-to-night room:

  1. Choose a durable sofa that can withstand the kids during the day and adults (with wine!) at night. The velvet sofa in my client’s home withstood 50,000 double-rubs on the durability test, so I know it will work.
  2. Try a great cocktail table that can hold flowers and incidentals in the daytime but will turn into a bar for evening entertaining.
  3. Choose art for your day-to-night space that will look bright and cheerful during the day, but will lean into moody hues when the sun sets.
  4. A soft and durable rug that the kids can play on in the daytime, and is easy to clean after the party at night, is perfect for a transitional space.
  5. Golden lamps will softly glow during the day and will bring the glam at night!

See? It’s just as easy to plan a room design that moves from daytime to night as it is to plan your day-to-evening outfits! Let me know how you use transition and function in your home by leaving me a comment below!

Tobi TV: 5 Tips for Family-Friendly Gathering Spaces

Posted by

I love creating spaces where people can gather and visit…it must be the Southern girl in me! And in my farmhouse project – featured on the April cover of Traditional Home – I wanted to give my clients several family-friendly rooms that would be perfect for their large family gatherings!

I have a few tricks for making sure everyone in the family feels comfortable and welcome, and I put them together in a fun Tip Clip for Traditional Home, so let’s take a look:

See how just a few thoughtful touches can make all the difference in a family-friendly space? Let’s review those ideas one more time:

1. The biggest key is to be sure you have lots of seating that can accommodate everyone, including some fabulous swivel chairs that will let people watch TV and still have conversations with others in the room.

2. When you have a lot of kids, you know that games and toys can accumulate, right? So I like to provide cabinetry where those things can be tucked away when guests are expected.

3. Multifunctional furniture is a great way to welcome everyone – like a coffee table that adjusts from a drinks height to a game-table height!

4. Even in formal spaces like a living room you can keep things welcoming for little ones, like using family-friendly fabrics that can stand up to spills and messes. There’s no need to keep anyone out of a room like this!

5. To let your spaces move between entertaining and family time, you can hide the TV away behind a screen like the one I created with wall art. That lets the little ones know when TV time is over!

Try these tips in your home to make every family member feel welcome! And let me know what your ideas are for family-friendly spaces in the comments section below!

Tobi TV: 4 Ways to Create Kids Rooms That Really Work

Posted by

It’s almost summer and your kiddos will be spending a lot of time at home. Spaces for your kids should be full of function AND fun, giving them an inspiring place to work and play!

In my farmhouse project that was just featured in Traditional Home, I designed kids’ spaces for this large family that would not only give them a great place to hang out, but would also showcase their personalities. Let’s take a look at ideas you can use in your home, too:

1. Break common areas such as dens and playrooms up into zones – like conversation areas, snack areas, and places for homework or crafts.

2. Every child needs a spot for a little privacy, like a quiet reading nook tucked into a hallway.

3. To make those rooms really work, be sure to provide tables for homework or crafts, and include plenty of storage for all of their games, toys, and supplies.

4. A great way to personalize any kids space is to put their art work and projects on display! They’ll be proud that you’ve showcased their special pieces!

Kids love to feel ownership over their own spaces, so use these tips to make them feel right at home! And let me know your ideas for kids’ zones in the comments section below.

Tobi-TV-logo-600x332

I love creating playful  and fun play areas for my clients with kids! Whether I’m using bright colors, whimsical patterns, or personal touches, we always have a blast designing rooms for imagination and play!

ss

Play areas are really where you can turn things up a notch when it comes to bright and cheerful looks that will spark creativity and activity! So let’s look at my top tips for designing those spaces:

Doesn’t that look like fun?! Let’s recap these tips for designing play spaces:

  1. Create zones for play, like one for video games, a table and chairs for board games, a place for snacking, and even areas for reading or relaxing. Use every bit of space in the room to maximize function!
  2. Use color and pattern – it creates lots of fun and loads of energy for the most play and creativity!
  3. Think about performance fabrics in a playroom. Being able to wipe them clean with little effort will give you peace of mind.
  4. Personalize the space with your own children’s art, with photos of them, or perhaps with art created of each one of them, like the fun silhouettes I designed of my client’s children.

I hope you’ll “play around” with these tips, and create a few of your own, for the best and most fun play room for your home! Get your creativity in gear!
