Tobi TV: 4 Ways to Create Kids Rooms That Really Work

Posted by

It’s almost summer and your kiddos will be spending a lot of time at home. Spaces for your kids should be full of function AND fun, giving them an inspiring place to work and play!

In my farmhouse project that was just featured in Traditional Home, I designed kids’ spaces for this large family that would not only give them a great place to hang out, but would also showcase their personalities. Let’s take a look at ideas you can use in your home, too:

1. Break common areas such as dens and playrooms up into zones – like conversation areas, snack areas, and places for homework or crafts.

2. Every child needs a spot for a little privacy, like a quiet reading nook tucked into a hallway.

3. To make those rooms really work, be sure to provide tables for homework or crafts, and include plenty of storage for all of their games, toys, and supplies.

4. A great way to personalize any kids space is to put their art work and projects on display! They’ll be proud that you’ve showcased their special pieces!

Kids love to feel ownership over their own spaces, so use these tips to make them feel right at home! And let me know your ideas for kids’ zones in the comments section below.

I love creating playful  and fun play areas for my clients with kids! Whether I’m using bright colors, whimsical patterns, or personal touches, we always have a blast designing rooms for imagination and play!

ss

Play areas are really where you can turn things up a notch when it comes to bright and cheerful looks that will spark creativity and activity! So let’s look at my top tips for designing those spaces:

Doesn’t that look like fun?! Let’s recap these tips for designing play spaces:

  1. Create zones for play, like one for video games, a table and chairs for board games, a place for snacking, and even areas for reading or relaxing. Use every bit of space in the room to maximize function!
  2. Use color and pattern – it creates lots of fun and loads of energy for the most play and creativity!
  3. Think about performance fabrics in a playroom. Being able to wipe them clean with little effort will give you peace of mind.
  4. Personalize the space with your own children’s art, with photos of them, or perhaps with art created of each one of them, like the fun silhouettes I designed of my client’s children.

I hope you’ll “play around” with these tips, and create a few of your own, for the best and most fun play room for your home! Get your creativity in gear!

Tobi TV: Top 4 Tips to Give Your Kid’s Room a Kick

Posted by

Tobi-TV-logo-600x332

It’s back to school time, so this week’s Tobi TV is all about the kiddos. But I love making every day all about them in their own spaces by creating kids’ rooms with “kick,” lots of bright colors and fun! After all, your little ones are special every day. And you’re stimulating little minds with these spaces, while also giving them rooms that will spark their imaginations and allow them to dream!

ss

In my daughter’s most recent bedroom, I used her favorite color at the time. It’s important to give kids a lot of input into what their room looks like, so they really feel at home there. I also gave her a daybed that she could use both for lounging and sleeping, and of course we set up a desk for her homework. In our new home, her room is something more grown-up with brighter colors and hints of her favorite color now…blue!

It’s key to combine function, style, and creativity in a child’s room, so here are some tips that will help you create that perfect space:

Let’s recap those tips that will help you give your kids’ rooms a “kick”:

  1. Use accessories that not only provide color, but also sneak in a little educational value! Use maps, globes, and charts to bring in bold color and bright ideas.
  2. Create an art station with a magnetic chalkboard. Offer bins of chalk, magnetic letters and poetry, as well as fun stencils to spark that creativity!
  3. Design “zones” in the room, for sleeping, lounging, homework, and play. Give your child “ownership” of their room with places for them to hang out with friends, to study, or to just dream!
  4. Function is all-important in a kid’s room, so consider how you’re using each square foot of space. You can fit beds into dormer windows to create more room, or use multifunctional pieces of furniture that can serve more than one purpose. And no matter what – don’t forget lots of storage!

Use these tips to kick your kids’ rooms up a notch! And let me know what ideas you love to use in your children’s spaces. Also, be sure to share this video with your friends who have kids, too!

Happy decorating with your kiddos!

Family rooms are great gathering places for the home – it’s the one place where you can get all the family members to hang out together! So you want this room to really work for the people who live there.

Whether your room is large like the one in this video or much smaller, all my tips for making your space function will still apply. Take a look:

Comfort and function – two of my favorite things! Let’s review those tips:

1. Multiple seating groupings in a room help you take advantage of all your square footage. Think about creating “conversation areas” within your space.

2. Swing arm lamps add the perfect amount of light for reading and are great when there isn’t enough room for tables and lamps.

3. Ottomans floating in your space can be pulled up to a variety of chairs and sofas or stand alone as an additional seat. They also add comfortable resting spots for feet when it’s time to relax.

4. Swivel chairs are perfect for swiveling towards the television or swiveling back into a conversation area, or two!

5. Recliners that look like club chairs are the perfect combination of comfort and style.

Try including these tips and techniques into your family room for the ultimate in function and beauty. Now leave me a comment and let me know which of these tips really resonate with you. And be sure to share this post with all your design-loving friends!
