What Is That Color? Going Greige

The very best color for a bedroom is any hue that makes you relax – a color that makes you feel like you’ve reached a calm oasis. So when I choose colors for my clients’ master bedrooms, I always go for soothing shades like a soft blue, blush, subtle green or a shade of beige. And in this particular room, I had a good jumping-off point for this neutral.

I like to choose my paint colors by first looking at the fabrics I’m going to use in a room. I knew this fabulous Duralee fabric would make my clients happy, with the subtle yellow and the geometric print. So I chose the paint color from that great neutral right in the center of the pattern. It just happens to be a melded shade that a lot of people love right now, called greige. It isn’t quite grey and it isn’t not exactly beige, but it’s in neutral territory between the two!

The exact color I chose is Sherwin-Williams 7031 Mega Greige. It’s the perfect background and balance for the touches of yellow in the room (did you notice the little detail of yellow in the trim on the bed?). It keeps the yellow from being overly bright and intense in the room, and instead grounds the colors in a quiet way.

So what do you think of this color? Do you like to use greige in your home? Let me know in the comments section below!

New House Diary: Floor It

New House Diary

By the time you read this, I should be back into my new house because yesterday was moving day! It’s been so much fun to watch the last few details get nailed down and put into place as we hit the home stretch over the last few days. I have never seen so many hard-working people helping me get this house ready and pull off my move.

One thing in my house that is a serious workhorse this week (and will be for years to come) – but rarely gets the glory – is all of the lovely flooring. We have traipsed dozens of boxes, appliances, sofas and more across them already and they are just getting started supporting all our activities in our newly remodeled home.

The beautiful black-and-white Emser Tile in my entry literally made me jump up and down – it’s just that pretty! It’s called Times Square so it reminds me of my favorite city and I just love this classic look. It’s clean and sophisticated, and it will really make a statement for guests as they enter my house. ProSource has been a fabulous sourcing partner to help me find the perfect look for each room and they have the best vendors who have been such a joy to work with!

If you’ve been paying attention to this regular column of mine, you may have also seen a  hint of what the floors in my kitchen and wet bar just might be, too!

IMG_6489A little like another of my favorite places, this floor is reminiscent of a Paris Bistro. And though it looks like marble, it’s glass. This cool new product from Daltile looks great and doesn’t show anything, especially dirt and lint. I LOVE it!

And upstairs in the guest bath, these grey marble hexagon tiles from Speartek give the room a soft glow. It’s another classic look that really makes an impact, even if it isn’t the first thing you’ll notice in this room.

There are so many pretties on the floors of this house, I can’t decide my favorite, but in the running is definitely the fabulous Daltile mosaic floor in the master bathroom! Don’t you just love that classic Greek key motif around the border?! It is such a stunning design and turned out even better than I imagined!

IMG_6494And don’t forget all the gorgeous AND eco-friendly wood floors from Shaw in a warm color called “Wheat Penny.”  They cover a lot of my home. With our allergies, pets, and kids, I definitely wanted the old, dirty carpet that came with the house out of there and sleek and beautiful hardwoods in its place. Now just walking up my stairs and seeing hardwoods span the length of the house and into my yoga room makes me feel more calm and relaxed. Namaste Shaw Flooring!

So what do you think about my new floors so far? Do you like the classic look of black and white that runs through much of the house? Give me your comments in the section below!

What Is That Color? Sky High

I love the challenge of creating unusual rooms that fit my clients’ lifestyles. So I was thrilled when one of my clients said that they wanted a “twirling room” for their daughter, who just happens to be a champion baton twirler. They wanted her to have a place at home where she could practice, that would inspire her to reach new heights – literally! So I knew I had to choose the perfect color for a room that would be all about hard work, achievement, and inspiration.

Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 10.18.00 AM

I chose Sherwin-Williams Silvermist – a great blue-gray color that reminds me of a quiet summer sky. Because the room needed to be so tall to function well, I wanted to emphasize that feeling of openness and space, and have a color that would softly glow in the natural light. I love how the color is reflected in all of the mirrors, too!

So what do you think of this space, and its sky-high color? Let me know in the comments section below!

Before and After: A Serene Master Bath

The master bath is one of the top rooms that most homeowners want to renovate, with the kitchen being the #1 room, of course. Most of those homeowners want a “spa like” experience in the bath, and my clients for this project were no different! They wanted a relaxing retreat that would soothe any stresses from their everyday lives! But they also wanted more room and organization. Two things that can definitely add to a stress free life. So an addition was definitely on tap for this redo!

Picture 010

In the before photo above, you can see that the room was dated and dark, with carpeting and cabinetry that didn’t work for the space. They definitely needed more room and updated fixtures!

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 9.24.07 AM

For the updated room, I brightened the design with new colors that make the room look fresh, clean, and soothing! I also added this fabulous vanity that is perfect for getting ready to meet the day. Notice that there’s plenty of storage now, too. And for perspective, this vanity area just off the master bath was the square footage of almost the entire bathroom before.

Picture 012

The bathroom “before” had a tiny entry to the shower that included one of those flimsy brass-framed doors. That made the shower a dark and not-very-inviting space.

We opened moved the bathroom wall back 10-12 feet and instead of the garden tub as the focal point on the back wall, now we have a large and beautiful luxurious marble trimmed shower. We also have a gorgeous frameless glass door, a lower step into the shower, and I even added multi-functional plumbing fixtures for that perfect spa experience! Plus I added a large and updated vanity with two sinks and lots of storage drawers and cabinets.

The master closet was accessed through the bathroom in the “before,” which was awkward and cluttered for the homeowner. By moving the master closet into an extension that I created for the home, it allowed us to open up the bathroom, and to even add a fantastic coffee or wet bar in the space (you can see it below). This is a great place for the homeowners to make coffee in the morning, or to have wine in the evenings or most likely, a bottle of water in the middle of the night. And we have additional linen storage in the beautiful cabinet to the left.
