4 Ideas for Metropolitan Style

Posted by

Modern design enthusiasts may think they will only find “big city” style in places like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago. But you can get the chic and sleek look you crave, no matter where you live.

Right here in Little Rock, Ark., I harnessed that city style for my Riverside Penthouse project, and I’m going to show you exactly how you can use these ideas to give your space a modern look and feel.

That entryway is metro marvelous! Here’s another look at a few tips that will give you a lot of big city style:

  1. Think glam: A velvet and vinyl banquette will definitely add that sophisticated city look to your home. It’s perfect for entertaining or having a few friends over for cocktails.
  2. A gorgeous marbelized wall covering in every shade of blue from cobalt to ink will make your space feel penthouse perfect. And it offers ready-made art, as well!
  3. Black-and-white striped marble floors would make a jailhouse rock – and the high-gloss makes them super-chic.
  4. Blue suede doors would make Elvis proud – add some glass doorknobs and they are definitely fit for a King.

A great city view is a bonus, but even if you live in the suburbs, these tips will help you feel like you’re living large in the big city.

Stay colorful!

My Project on the Cover of Traditional Home!

Posted by

I am so happy to share some exciting news with you: My project is featured on the cover of the April issue of Traditional Home that hits newsstands and mailboxes across America this week! It’s such an honor and I am so thankful to Ann Maine, Krissa Rossbund and the entire Traditional Home team, especially because they also gave the project 10 pages inside!

It really means so much to me to have the cover on this issue, since it’s one of the last to have the stamp of Ann Maine, who is retiring as editor in chief of Traditional Home. She has been such a mentor and huge influence on me, and I wish her well as she moves into a new chapter of her life!

In the coming weeks, I’ll bring you more inside looks at this luxe farmhouse project, including before-and-afters! If you see the article, let me know what you think. It’s definitely one of my faves!

Before and After: A Grown Up Space

Working on spaces for clients who have young children can be a challenge. If you’re a parent yourself, you know how quickly a gorgeous sofa can be destroyed by juice and dirty shoes, or how great accessories are just toys in a little person’s mind. And it’s not like it’s our fault as parents. We’re so busy trying to keep our heads above water most of the time, we can’t even think about our homes and keeping them clutter-free, right? So when I have the chance to take a client’s home from kid zone to grown-up space, I love it! I know it’s going to make a big difference in everyone’s quality of life and stress level.

As you can see above, my clients in this project had some well-loved pieces of furniture, mixed in with a whole lot of toys and play areas. They wanted to take back their living room, and make it a chic space where adults could hang out, have great conversation, and enjoy some “me time.”

I added in a lot of built-in cabinetry to hide toys, books, and clutter, to help these clients to keep the space fabulous and clean. I also lightened up the color palette, allowing the natural light to really shine through the living room.

Dark draperies, muddy colors, and well-used items from the before image above needed to go, especially the tired furniture.

And the furnishings I brought in have family-friendly fabrics on them, so kids don’t have to see this room as a no-go zone. They can still run through or play in this room without leaving marks and dirt that can’t be cleaned up.

I also edited down the amount of accessories in the living room, taking out the candles, more traditional elements like the fabric runner, and knick knacks.

It doesn’t mean they’re gone! There is now a place for everything in the shelves and in storage hidden behind those fabulous doors in the built-ins. When company is coming, it’s easy to hide the clutter quickly to keep the space looking gorgeous.

So what do you think of this before and after? What tricks do you use for grown-up spaces in a home with kids? Let me know in the comments section below!

Tobi TV: Adding a Touch of Glam

Posted by

I love a room that has a touch of glam. Oh, who am I kidding?! I love a fully glam room, too! But it’s a real balancing act to create a gorgeous room that has just the right touch of glitz without going too far over the top. Think about how glam translates in fashion – it’s really the same idea for interiors!

Those fab touches can add luxury and style to any room, but how do you keep that glam-quotient right where it needs to be? I’ve got some great tips that I love to use in the interiors I design – so let’s roll the video to see what they are!

Now those are some va-va-voom spaces, right?! That should give you some ideas from small glamorous additions to full-on Hollywood glitz! Let’s review them again:

1. Use sheen and shine, to reflect your glamorous side! Silver and gold metallic tones give a room that luxury, just like your jewelry is the finishing touch for your wardrobe. And remember that mirrors can also put a sparkle into any space!

2. Texture is so important for luxurious looks in a room. Think about velvets, plush chenilles, silks, and satins!

3. Leather is also key to giving a room the look and feel of a luxe life! Try to use leather in exciting colors other than black or brown for a true glam style – like blush, yellow, or lavender!

4. Is there anything more bewitching and glam than a lacquered ceiling? Well maybe snakeskin wallpaper and fur throws! Keeping the colors toned-down and monochromatic helps this mix of moxie stay fun and fabulous.

5. There’s nothing better than jewel tones for a glamorous color palette – especially when they evoke those sparklers that Elizabeth Taylor loved so much: pearls, sapphires, emeralds, amethyst, and rubies!

6. If you don’t want to commit to a lacquered ceiling, how about trying a metallic wallpaper up above? Or try sinuous shapes and bright colors to add that captivating charisma to a room!

Don’t you just love a glamorous life? Let me know how you use a little glam in your decor in the comments section below! And I’ll see you next time on Tobi TV!

Before and After: A Sophisticated Bedroom

Posted by

A master bedroom really should be a retreat – the perfect getaway for rest and relaxation. So when I started the redesign on my clients’ bedroom, I knew that we not only needed to give it a more modern and sophisticated update, but we also needed to make it a more relaxing room.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 9.49.54 AM

I love natural light, but as you can see in the “before” photo above, this room was almost too bright. There were no window coverings to help darken the room for a great night’s sleep. The neutral walls, ceiling and carpet just bounced that light around, creating a too-bright effect. So I knew I needed to soften the light in the room, and to give the room a palette that would be serene and sophisticated.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 9.56.01 AM

The combination of taupe, grays, and plums really gave the master bedroom a chic sense of calm. And new furnishings and accessories really amped up the style quotient, giving this room a fabulous and more modern update.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 9.59.38 AM

And while my clients loved having extra seating in this bedroom, the old sofa they were using just didn’t work for them.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 9.59.16 AM

I gave them two fantastic and comfortable chairs, with a shared ottoman that could work as both an extra table, or a place to rest their feet after a long day.

So what do you think of this Before and After? Didn’t it create a more relaxing retreat? Let me know in the comments section below! And if you want to see the Luxury Spa Bathroom that is part of this lovely Master Suite, you can Find it here.
