Tobi’s Design: An Untrained Perspective

Ready for a laugh? Tobi suggested that I share with you my take on design!

Ok, wait. I realize that may not seem shocking to you considering I’m an employee at an interior design firm, so let me give you a little bit of background…

I am NOT a designer, not by a long shot. I am, well..if I had to sum it up with one word…a reader. I was an English major and then I got a Master’s degree in American Studies. So, yup! I’m a reader. I read, comprehend, interpret, and analyze. And, for Tobi, I communicate. That’s the kind of thing that really gets me going…not interior design. And this is pretty much my idea of a perfect room:

Well…until Tobi:

Hampton's showhouse overallBOOM goes the dynamite! I mean, yeah, she’s good. One day, Tobi mentioned that she had been browsing my Pinterest boards, and (I kid you not!) she asked me: “You mean you really like those rooms? That’s really your design style? You think they’re beautiful?” Of course she wasn’t being mean; it’s just that we are surrounded all the time by Tobi’s stunning bright, bold, and tailored look, and I’d describe the look that appeals to me most as…rustic/nostalgic/eclectic/whimsical/bohemian/falling apart. Not exactly an alignment, right? Design by Tobi Fairley

BUT only the experience of walking into a room designed by Tobi has been able to show me how interior design communicates. It works to evoke very specific feelings, to emphasize the importance to a resident or family of particular spaces or activities they share. When done right (and, Tobi does) it says more–speaks differently–than words can. It’s an artform.

And these are just my favorites (well, the only ones I’m allow to show you for now). They probably aren’t the ones that EVERYONE says are TO DIE FOR, but they are the ones that speak to ME! So, enjoy!

Vulnerability = Strength!

Hello, world! It’s me again, Ashley.

While Tobi is in Germany for the next few days I’ll be bringing you more insights from the Team Tobi perspective! We do, after all, have to earn our keep while we are holding-down the fort.

As I described when I played blogsitter during her Disney trip, Tobi has been a great source of support and encouragement for me as I work to unlearn my ingrained perfectionism and sense of unworthiness. It frustrates her SO MUCH to see me subconsciously sabotaging my own happiness by always giving-in to all of my imagined “shoulds” and “ought-tos,” and because she is such a caring bosslady, she passes along the bits of wisdom she comes across that she knows will help me get the message that I am enough.

And my posts got such heartfelt response from many of you who are struggling with the same challenges. So, I decided that maybe I could share a few of the KEY resources Tobi has come across and shared with me that have been really transformative to my way of thinking about what my life can be.

And the unifying element in two of these tidbits is Brene Brown! She’s the queen of how to overcome crippling perfectionism and embrace self-acceptance. If you haven’t heard of her, you’re going to really love what she has to say about the role of vulnerability in recovering from shame and perfectionsim.

Enjoy!

Tomorrow, I’m sharing my take on Tobi’s design aesthetic: It’ll be a non-expert perspective on the backstage pass of incredible interior design. Excited?

Much love,

Ash

Taking my Lead from Life

This week I am traveling to Berlin, Germany for the Leadership of Design Council’s annual summit with 200 of the top architects and designers from the US and a few abroad.  This trip has me thinking about what it means to see myself as a leader in the many roles I play in life. I do believe I’m a leader, but not because of anything remarkable I have done. For me, it’s  all about my attitude toward life and what my relationships mean to me.

And even though it may seem like a contradiction, leadership (in my business, in my family, and in my community) is not about making people do what I think is right or best by convincing them to see things my way. Instead it’s all about listening, learning, understanding, and then acting from awareness.

It’s all about staying clear about who I am, what I want from life, and what I LOVE, while also staying totally open to what messages God or the Universe or life itself has for me as I make my way.

And it’s about having the courage to make changes when I see or feel the need, rather than letting fear keep me on a path I don’t think is right anymore. So, the ability to monitor and adjust is a big part of this leadership mindset, too. Overcoming the fear of the unknown and embracing change when I feel intuitively that it’s the RIGHT thing.

And I am always learning more about what a leader is, which usually means greater humility, deeper gratitude, and stronger commitment to service. And, I’m learning, it’s all about seeing (and then awakening) the potential in a person or a situation that might be hidden from plain sight.

And I’m not the kind of person who thinks that there are Leaders and there are Followers. I think that in different times and places, we all can (and should) be leaders. Because being a true leader means also knowing when to follow.

This way of thinking sounds a bit tangled, but I think it will ring true to anyone who chooses to see the world through the eyes of a leader. May happiness follow wherever YOU lead.

Selfcare Saturday (Rainy and Fabulous!)

tumblr_mgjcurz7Yg1reios0o1_500_large

I’ve been so into my self care Saturday that I haven’t even taken a moment to blog. That’s what’s so great about self care, right?

I have been nestled in on this rainy Spring Saturday with my daughter and my 2 pups and so far we’ve watched 3 movies. The ultimate in self-care is surrounding yourself with Love.
