I am asked one question more than anything else…”How do you do it all?”
The answer is I don’t. I have lots of help–an amazing team at work, a rock-star hubby who shares our home responsibilities with me, and several other people in my life including amazing cleaning ladies, dog sitters, teen-age sitters for my daughter, an amazing mom and the list goes on and on. There is NO way anyone can do it all themselves. We must learn to ask for help and delegate to get it all done.
And there is a part 2 to this equation…there are just tons of things I say NO to. Yep…there it is! The magic pill. Just say no. We MUST say no to way more than we say yes to in order to have the lives we want. And let’s be honest…some things (many things) we spend our time doing just aren’t that important. About a year ago, I started eliminating all sorts of things from my life that were not a priority or that didn’t really get me closer to my goals, to make room for the things that did.
My 4th resolution in January went like this…”This year, I
want to will subscribe to the 4 hour work week concept of effective over efficient. It’s NOT about doing as much as possible even if doing it efficiently. The glorification of busy is OVER! Now it’s about ONLY doing what is absolutely necessary to reach my goals. Cut through the clutter. Cut through the Noise. Multitasking is over-rated. So I will, in as few hours as possible, create Inspired Design and continue nurturing my rapidly growing consulting business and leave the rest of my life for Inspired Living (or starting new Inspired companies with Inspiring people–yes, I’m still an entrepreneur!) I will use my time at work only for the important stuff, and everything else must go, so I can Live…truly LIVE. In the present. Inspired Business.”
I am proud to say that I am 100% living in this philosophy this year and I LOVE IT!!!! Slow living at it’s best. Slow is the new fast! I have cut so much out of my life that was not serving me. Effective action is definitely my motto these days and it’s freeing up much more time for my family and me! I can say without a doubt this is the year of living my best life yet, and I know with my new habits it will only get better and better.
So what are the things that have become a priority for me like never before? Working from home on Monday, keeping my “Tobi days” on Friday (remember they are my time for massage, rest, relaxation–not work), and MUCH more time with my daughter. I can say for the first time in her 8 years of life, I have really spent time with my daughter this summer like I always say I will. Time at the pool in the middle of the day, less travel, almost 2 weeks off from work in a row all spent with her. Sometimes our goal is doing nothing but laying in the grass and making “animals” in the clouds. This will be a summer she and I both remember for years to come and I am determined that they will all be like this for her. But believe me, I am the one who benefits the most. My cup runneth over!
So how are you doing on being effective and eliminating the un-neccesary from your life? It’s time to get real about all your “I can’t excuses” because you can do anything you want.
Start today eliminating or delegating and seeing just how much time you can free up. As Tim Ferris teaches in the Four Hour Work Week, it’s not about having idle time, but it’s about having “freedom of time” so you can do what you want instead of what you “have to”. That is what makes us happy. We need time to live our passion and since there are only 24 hours in a day, we can’t get more time…we can only free up time.
I’ve done this and it’s amazing. You can do it too! Start freeing up your time today so you can celebrate your success in all those extra moments.
See you tomorrow for Self-care Saturday and my last resolution recap.
