Day 7 of things I love…Shelter Magazines.

In a day where the computer, smart phones, iPads, and e-readers have taken over, I must say that I still love to get my real-live print magazines in the mail each month.

It’s like Christmas when they arrive and I cannot wait to carve out a bit of time to cuddle up with my mags and a glass of wine or cup of tea for some major design inspiration. And if something is really special, I even love tearing it out and keeping in a safe place for future reference.

I subscribe to about fifteen titles in total and I’m always looking for more great magazines to support. Some of my special favorites…House Beautiful, Canadian House and Home, Traditional Home, and Veranda. But I have to say I am especially excited about the new AD and I am anxiously awaiting the March issue, Margaret Russell’s first complete issue, to hit my mailbox soon.

So although I totally dig all the new digital magazines like Lonny, Rue, and High Gloss, there will always be a special place in my heart for my shelter magazines in print.

Day #20 of things I love…good ole fashioned shelter magazines, in print!

I SO agree with you! I’m a [print] magazine “junkie” and always have been. I can’t imagine life without my “real” magazines! Love your 25 Days series…

  2. Beth Whitlow says:

I totally agree! The new digitals are great, but there’s nothing like flipping through those glossy magazine pages! You have probably already seen it, but when I was in Charleston last month, I picked up a copy of Charleston Home Mag (http://www.charlestonmag.com/home) and thought it was wonderful!

  3. Ed Sexton says:

Until the last couple of years, I felt the same way Toby. I sold advertising for Progressive Architecture for many years and loved holding the glossy shelter pubs in my hand. But somehow it just changed and with Zinio I subscribe online to all my favorites now. I know the digital image is not 100% as nice as the printed page but we do all benefit from the new younger perspective now that online publishing is available to almost anyone. As opposed to the enormous expense of publishing via print and delivering via the USPS. Hopefully there is a future for both.

Completely agree!! I also ‘tear’ with the exception of WoI..the entire collection of which sits, white spines out, on my library shelves…like tempting white chocolate bars. xx colette

  5. I have never seen CANDADIAN HOUSE AND HOME, I will take your recommendation and look out for it!

  6. Couldn’t agree more! When it comes to inspiration for projects I’m working on, I rank a good design magazine right up there w/a trip to the [Chicago Merchandise] Mart. Ditto the LOVE for House & Home. And, GO Margaret Russell! Work your wonders on AD so we can all look forward to having another great design magazine each month.

  7. Heidi M says:

Yes, there’s nothing like the print shelter mags– I have a couple just waiting for me today. :) bliss.

  8. John Kelsey says:

I too look forward to the mail and the arrival of each month’s new issues of design magazines. They quickly become dog-eared, tagged with post it notes and pages get torn out for Sally’s and my “What’s Your Style” notebooks. Scanning does come in handy, too, for the same reason. I can’t quite totally let go… (It’s kind of like CAD. As great as it is for some things, I still love my roll of trace, scale and a soft pencil…) On the other hand, I can always find that old issue such and such in the computer far easier than I can find the print version…

  9. This weekend, my House Beautiful, Elle Decor and NEW AD all arrived on the same day. Made for a wonderful Saturday night, and AD did not disappoint.
Thanks for including us in the lineup, we’re in very good company, and I hope your readers support their local mags, as they offer the chance to be both inspired AND to find nearby resources for fulfilling that inspiration.

  10. It’s so good to see two Canadian shelter mags – Canadian House and Home and Style at Home in your favorites! I agree, as much as I enjoy the digital new magazines there is something really special about a print mag. Since I was little, at Christmas, Santa would bring me a magazine in my stocking. My favorite thing to do was to cuddle up with a blanket by the fire on Christmas morning and leisurely flip the pages. Even now that I am old and gray Santa still brings me a stack of interesting shelter mags to enjoy!

  11. Tricia Heliker says:

I could not agree more. I LOVE my magazines. I had so many past issues stored in a special closet that one shelf gave way. I finally found a good home for some of them but I am rapidly accumulating again. It’s always a banner day when one arrives in the mail.

  12. Absolutely nothing better than then feel of it in your hand. Same goes for a real book. Although having the Kindle and Ipad come in handy I still gravitate towards the real thing!

  13. diane says:

I am so with you on this one. They make a long plane ride tolerable or a day by the pool even better (if that is possible) I miss the days when I could go to the bookstore and stock op on several new magazines for an upcoming trip. and while I also enjoy the new digital versions it just “ain’t” the same.

  14. Glad to hear our magazine made your list! We’ve also got an online version and iPad app available for those who prefer the digital versions, too (http://s.houseandhome.com/godigital/).

    Cheers,
