Before & After: Breakfast Room

Today, I thought we’d take another before and after look at my home.   This time we’ll focus on the breakfast area in the kitchen.

The breakfast area had great windows looking out to the patio and back yard.  I envisioned a banquette in this area to maximize seating and create a cozy nook for my family.

A new custom-made banquette fills the recess in front of the windows.  I chose houndstooth fabric for the back panel and a durable vinyl for the seat cushion.  The balloon shade is executed in a graphic crewel fabric.  Comfy down-filled pillows complete the look.

Layers of outdated wallpaper had to be stripped from the walls.  The wall paint was just too dark for the bright and airy look I envisioned.

As you can see, the new brighter color scheme is much more fitting for a family-friendly space.  The travertine-look porcelain in a larger size than previous tile helps to enhance the clean, bright look.

The painted wallpaper and 1970s paneling were stripped away to make way for a new chair rail and updated panel mouilding.

The new wall mouldings provide a great clean backdrop for my breakfast chairs from Hickory Chair.  I repeated the crewel from the balloon shades on the outside backs of the chairs.  Vinyl on the seats make clean up a breeze!  Stay tuned for more before and afters from my home later this month.

As usual, delightful eye candy! Love Hickory Chair and your fabric choices. I have a question, it appears there is a heat/ac vent on the floor under the window, how did you handle that with the banquette?

love, love, love everything about this room. Can you tell me who makes that crewel? the blackboard paint on the armoire is brilliant and the larger floor tiles really do make a difference. I knew you were a good designer but this room is brilliant! ( a bit of hyperbole, I know, but such a beautiful room I got carried away)
