While working on my curriculum for Design Summer Camp, planning my blog editorial calendar and deciding on material for my appearances for KATV Channel 7′s Design Time with Tobi Fairley segments, I began thinking about my favorite DIY projects. DIY posts seem to get more hits than anything on my blog and get rave reviews on my TV segments.
This AMAZING chevron floorcloth by Kansas City Designer David Jimenez (he has a gorgeous website by the way) is one of my favorite DIY projects I have seen of late. It was created for his DIFFA Dining by Design Event in Kansas City earlier in the year.
Now, I want to know what your favorite DIY project is. Here’s your chance to impact my blog, Design Camp and TV segments. Post your ideas as comments on my blog today…Pretty Please!!!!!!
I can’t wait to hear from you.
xoxo,Tobi

Hey Tobi!
Great engaging post!
My favorite DIY I ever did was simply taking a photo my husband had captured while we were in NYC, and printing it (at home) as a poster. It was a photo of a Taxi Cab traffic jam in front of the Seagram’s Building, so it has color and graphic impact. Printing it as poster, enlarged it to NINE separate images, which I mounted and framed into nine simple black frames with white matts, and created a GRID FOCAL POINT in our Florida great room. (It really popped being set on a charcoal accent wall.) Total cost was only $35 (mainly for the frames).
The taxi cab yellow became the inspiration for the accent color used in the room – paired with B&W. I enJOY your posts and good luck with collecting these DIY’s! I’m sure it will be fun reading through them…

Hi Tobi, I am assuming this is what Donna was referring to. For me DIY projects are best with PAINT transformations. As you know the power of paint. I am pretty much the spray paint, paint queen. I love fun, whimsical color schemes…I am very eclectic, and really love color all around me.I have inspired many gals on my blog to step out of their comfort zone and use more color. Hope this helps somewhat…you can check out my blog, and on my side bar I have my home tour and some paint projects too.
I love some DIY!!!! My favority DIY project involved a dining room chandelier in need of TLC. It was a dingy, pale green and just not dramatic at all. I spray painted it a dark bronze and added mini shades that are black on the outside and bronze on the inside. It adds such drama and glamour to my dining room. (And spray paint is FUN!)
Hi Tobi
Summer DIY projects must be in the air. I have just posted a wonderful DIY table by the Portuguese designer Goncalo Campos.

Good luck with your Summer Design Camp. It sounds like fun!!

Would you ever consider doing a weekend workshop? I’m in the Dallas area and my best friend lives in Arkansas. I would love to come and be able to do it with her.
We are working on a project with a client re-do for a young boy’s bedroom. Budget is a big concern but didn’t want a bed in a bag. Embellished a ready-made plaid comforter with big wood buttons and layered with another solid comforter. Needed stripe pillows to pull it all together. Could not find a really wide stripe in the 3 colors we needed so we made our own. Brown, red and khaki broadcloth sewn together in 3 different size widths. The pillows are perfect and you cannot tell that we literally made our own stripe fabric. It looks really good, Only wish we had thought of it earlier. We could have saved ourselves tons of time searching for the perfect stripe. We also painted his name on a long narrow burlap pillow for a wonderful effect much cheaper than huge monogram would have been. Client is very happy!
Toni,
I love all the accent pillows you show. They always have great embellishments i.e. buttons, ruffles, ribbon, trim etc and think they would be a great DIY project.
Wish I could go to summer camp this year!
Diane
LOVE this ikea upgrade!
