A Bite for Prosperity

Martha Stewart

My family is a firm believer in the tradition of eating black eyed peas on New Years Day to usher in a year of prosperity. I don’t think I have ever missed a New Year’s Day without at least one bite of peas in all my 37 years.

My mom has brought them along on ski trips, Cotton Bowl visits, and any other place we have ever been to ring in the new year. And I adopted the same habit when I started my own family. I just cleaned up the kitchen from our annual New Year’s Day lunch of Southern fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and yes, black eyed peas.

So, now I am looking towards another year of prosperity in 2010. And even if you aren’t superstitious, you still have a few more hours to get a bite or two just in case.

Happy New Year!

I am to late, had never heard of this, do not think I have ever seen a black eyed pea…I will be on the look out now.
I must mention I was watching tv yesterday and a show came on hgtv top ten garages and you were on the show, well I told my husband I follow her blog! and she was in Vancouver this past year with some of the other bloggers I follow…I think he thought I was a little weird (he doesn’t fully understand blogging) but I was thrilled to see you on the show, well done you!
Regards and Happy New Year to you, Carol Ann

    Hi Carol Ann,

The Black eyed pea tradition is probably Southern by nature, but I am a religious believer in it’s powers! It’s never failed me yet. :-)

Thank you so much following my blog and for your compliments on HGTV’s top 10. It is supposed to start running here this month. I just received the DVD’s in the mail last week but haven’t taken the time to watch them yet. I am very happy to be included in the show on Garages and also the episode on Dens.

Happy New Year to you and I hope I bring you much more inspiration in 2010.
    xoxo Tobi

I haven’t followed this tradition religiously, it is a great way to ring in the new year. Happy 2010 Tobi!

This is so strange, I posted a response yesterday and it is not there. Oh well, stranger things have happened. I just wanted to let you know that as a recent transplant to Little Rock, I have been thrilled to see your work on our local homes in my favorite magazine, At Home in Arkansas. I really appreciate and respect your vision and love your fresh approach to the Old South. Your work reminds me of home in California. As I branch out here in Arkansas in a new career in design and construction, you fill me with inspiration and hope. Thank you! BTW, I loved the black eyed peas and catfish I made last week. What a great tradition… the food not the group…well some of the songs. LOL
