Barclay Butera:Living in Style

Posted by

I have had the pleasure of meeting many well-known designers across the country because of my blog. One of the very first was California designer Barclay Butera. About this time last year, I was writing about how much I loved Barclay’s Wing Chairs. I had barely gotten the blog post published before into my email inbox came a gracious email from Barclay. He thanked me for writing about his products and promised to send a copy of his new book, Living in Style, as a token of his appreciation.

Since that time, I have gotten to know Barclay much better and had the pleasure of meeting him in person many times at the High Point furniture market and at design events in New York and Los Angeles, and each time, Barclay and his staff are equally kind and gracious. So it isn’t any wonder that Barclay Butera has life-long relationships with his clients, including many who live high-profile and celebrity lives.

Barclay Butera grew up working in his mother’s design business who serviced clients world wide. After studying law, Barclay was drawn back to the design industry in his mid-twenties. It wasn’t long before Barclay was in the furniture business, designing his custom Barclay Butera Collection of upholstery and casegoods.

Barclay’s approach to design combines his client’s heirloom pieces with “new classics” that are just a bit edgier. Barclay draws inspiration from couture fashion detailing and melds his clients’ style with his influence to create “Fashion for the Home”.

Aside from fashion, Barclay’s designs are impacted by his travels as evidenced by the European, American and Far Eastern traditional elements that show up in his rooms.

It was this idea of traveling to many different destinations that set the tone for Barclay’s Book, Living in Style, and later his collection of textiles for Kravet Furniture Company. As you will find when reading Living in Style, Barclay’s designs and his philosophies are broken into 5 categories: Beach, Town and Country, Mountain, Desert, and City.

And though there is definitely a common look to all Barclay Butera designs, there is also great diversity in color and style in each of the five categories of Barclay’s projects.

Over the next week, I will introduce you to Barclay’s furniture collection including my favorite introductions at this Fall’s High Point Furniture market, as well as Barclay’s signature pieces for Hearst Castle and his line of rugs and fabrics for Kravet furniture.

And this Friday, one lucky reader will win an autographed copy of Barclay’s book, Living in Style. To enter please send an email to me at with “Barclay Butera Book Giveaway” in the subject line.  Only one entry per person, per week please. The drawing will be held this Friday, December 4th at noon Central time.

It has been such a treat to feature Jan Showers and her new book, Glamorous Rooms on the blog this week.  Jan’s work has long been an inspiration to designers and home owners alike and it is so exciting to have her rooms in glossy, gorgeous print for us all to peruse whenever we need a little bit of glam.

I had a wonderful interview with Jan earlier in the week discussing everything from what inspired her furniture collection, how the book came about, whether there is a sequel to the book in the works, what’s next for Jan, and much more.

So on this day after Thanksgiving, I hope you have 20 minutes or so to relax and listen to Jan and me as we discuss what exactly is happening in her life and career. Click on the link to the podcast below to hear our conversation.

Jan Showers: Giving Thanks

I recently had the pleasure of having dinner with Jan Showers in Dallas after a day filled with tours of the David Sutherland Showroom with the Jan Showers Collection, the Sutherland factory, the Perrenials Offices and Jan’s gorgeous boutique.  I loved seeing some of Jan’s pieces in person especially her Syrie Chair with the grosgrain detailing and her fabulous fireplace screen.

Spending an evening with Jan Showers, one of the most iconic and prolific designers today, was truly a delight and one of the many experiences that I am thankful for this year. I attribute so many of my exciting experiences over the last year to my blog and the many contacts I have made from it.

So on a similar note this Thanksgiving Eve, I thought it might be fun to know what someone as successful and talented as Jan Showers is thankful for. I asked Jan what 10 things came to mind that she was especially grateful for this year. Though Jan said her blessings were far too many to count, here are a few of the things that are near and dear to her this Thanksgiving.

1. My Family–husband Jim, my children,  and my grandchildren

2. Sharing Thanksgiving Day with my family at our Country Home

3. My brother and his family who will share the day with us

4. Good Health

5. Close friends whom I treasure–a good friend is worth gold!

6. The gifts God has given me that allow me to feel passionately about what I do on a daily basis

7. The amazing people I get to work with everyday–they are dedicated and diligent and we are like a family.

8.My book and everyone who made it a reality

9.The clients I work with–they allow me to use my talents and hopefully, I always give them my best

10. My dog, Sweetie

If you would like to enter to win a copy of Jan’s new book Glamorous Rooms, send an email to . One entry per person please. Drawing will be held Friday, November 27 at noon Central Time.

Happy Thanksgiving and Good Luck!
